The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You're right. And people with the money to have a horse NOW, might not have it next year, due to divorce, death, illness, whatever.

The dork that said, "you wouldn't sell your kids so you shouldn't sell your horse" really blew my mind. Call me crazy, but I don't put my horses on the same level as my children. Not even Tuffy. ;)

Well, that was pretty brassy for her to even ask you to do that. Like you said, people lose their licenses over things like that. I don't think you were wrong at all!

The mares are in their new home! We had to jump the kid's truck with mine to get it started. The battery went down from sitting for a week. It was just my daughter and I, but we got them loaded ok. Some hesitation, but a whip and the Arabian training halter my daughter has and they went in. The lady only as a small area fenced off for winter, but she showed us that in the summer months, she opens up a bigger pasture. Mud same as us, but a least she has a little grass. Both mares had to get a little zap from the fence. They will learn fast. A very nice person and she knows about horses, so I feel confidence they will be fine.

The new construction is a lean-to that the horses will be able to run in and out. Perfect for those two. You can see her gelding peaking out and Sable looking at him. He is locked in there for now. She has sold him and the man is suppose to pick him up tonight. The mares had been in the barn for a few days and were so happy to get out. It did my heart good, to see them running and bucking.

Totally off subject here, but I had to share this pic that Lee took of two of my lazy cats last night. Bear is on the left and Pearl on the right. Pearl was there first but Bear came up and rooted his way in, then proceeded to give Pearl a bath, then he went to sleep with his head on top of hers. Of course they woke up when they heard the camera turn on, but were too lazy to move. Are they pitiful or what?!

Great news! The mares sure look good too. So much different than they did when they first came to you. It sounds like an ideal situation for them and I sure am proud that you did so well by them. Good Job!

That looks like a plenty big paddock for them, and not overly muddy for already having had a horse on it. I'd like to see a little more wire on the fence, but then I tend to like overkill on fencing. :~)

Not having money doesn't have anything to do with fraud, and if she was trying to claim the medicine was for a completely different horse that is insured, that's fraud.

We've had to make choices... some non emergency stuff has had to wait on the horses and dogs at times, I'd like to think it would never come to sale if things got rough for us.

Bay I would never sell and there's few people I would entrust him to if I say, got hit by a truck. Not at his age. Before I married ecurbh Dad was actually under instruction that if Bob wouldn't take Bay eagerly he should put him down rather than sell him to a stranger. I still feel that. I hate to not trust that there are plenty of good homes out there, but I made a promise to that horse a long time ago.

I was thinking that the lady was trying to get them to call the medicine into the pharmacy under a PERSON'S name, a person who had prescription drug insurance, rather than under a horse's name. But maybe I misunderstood.

I would put George down before I would sell him. He's just too old and in ill health to start over again.

If I had to I could sell all of my other horses but I'd sure hate to sell Tuffy. I would like to thin the herd a bit, Mina would be the first to go. I really like her but I'm not wild about riding a 2 year old again.

Aw, Kittys are so cute. Keep you nice and warm too.

Almost forgot, but I did see you did find out, the Dixie Horse and Mule Company, sold trailers. Just a little too far for me to go pick one up. He did have a nice used living quarters one. After my shower is retiled, then I will start to really look for one.

I was never very keen on one strand electric fence either. They stayed clear of it, after getting a good zap. Sable went back so fast, she fell on her hunches. You feel bad, but it was rather funny. The new owner would not even look, after my daughter turned the fence on for her. Sable was leaning way over to the grass on the other side, the current came through and bam!

Oh I know, but what I'm saying is that she used that excuse when she tried to get me to put the meds under a person's name who had health insurance. She tried to pass it off as people meds. Red flags would have gone up at the pharmacy if a vet had called in trying to perscribe medication to a person.

There is of course, nothing wrong with not wanting to part with a horse, I'm not saying that there is. Giving up my horse was the hardest darn thing that I did. And also, certainly non emergency things can slide, I'm certainly not calling the person a bad owner- it was just pretty ballsy to ask me to put it under as people meds, claiming that she didn't have money.

The woman tried to hand it off under a person's insurance so that it would be covered under people meds.
