The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Boy, isn't THAT a nice roundpen! That horse sure looks pissed though. Looks like the guy lassoed him around the head and the rope is running over his outside ear. I'd be pissed too!

Did you see the link? It's a clinic for people that know how to ride but something happened and lost their confidence.

No she doesn't she just wants people gooing and gahing over her...

This is a person who is my age, made some money this winter selling puppies and considering leaving her husband to go to Ca. to pursue and acting career...has always wanted to be an actress...

Huh. Maybe the training is provoking a reaction?

I've done that Cindy, she can always make an excuse...I'm not her babysitter, not anymore anyway.

I know you think I'm mean...but at some point people HAVE to take responsibility for themselves. She's at that point.

There is no shame in saying "You know what, this turned out to be something I don't really enjoy".

Well, I rode Harley for his 30 minutes, we went out on trail today.

He was fine...no sign of soreness.

I think I'll keep him at 30 minutes for this week, then add 10 minutes each week till I get him up to an hour...what do you think???

I think that's certainly a conservative approach, no harm in that.

I should have added, that plan is contingent on that I can be consistent in riding him. If the weather shuts me down, the schedule my have to change.

It's nice here... I'm gonna go out and curry some hair off of mine, and lunge him a bit. He's been moving really good, but I still want to ground work him a week or two before putting weight on him, and April is right around the corner....

If you do what's called "ferrying" - tilting your boat against the current and backpaddling - you can actually hold your boat still or move it sideways across the current.

Or you can just tip over and wade to shore . . . < g >

Interesting. I'll bet that's pricey.

Yeah, April is coming fast, and I'm down to now that is when my first ride is going to be, and that ride is the toughest in the region IMO. Ark. If I miss too much I won't go to it either:(.

I proud to say, my horse is carrying 22 lbs less then he was last Sept:), by April I hope 10 more lighter.

I don't know that I'd have the patience to build him up that slow, but you definately won't hurt him doing it like you said.
