This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I'll go out later and get a picture of it and post it.
Is this the new baby?
OH, crooked how? bucked forward?
Becky
Yes, the new baby. His right front leg comes down straight to the knee and then angles out to the side. His knee looks swollen also. :(
I'm sure you know this, but that is how joint ill starts in a foal...is he lame at all?
Becky
Oh dear... are you having a vet out? Or is Bob pretty sure it's OK?
Wow! What a surprise!
Dude! You got a Dell! Congratulations. :-p Hahaha, I remember those commericals.
I hate change. Here I am talking about posting pictures and I can't even find spread sheet. I know it's here somewhere
Oh - the copper display, it was on the camera too.
Outstanding. Keeping my fingers crossed.
If you know all this please forgive, I'm not trying to be a know it all...Looks like it could be tight tendons (there's a name for it but I can't remember what it is). My understanding is it happens when the leg grows (and this can happen before birth) faster then the tendons, so the tendons are really tight and makes the leg bow, out wards. It's a tendon that runs up the back of the leg.
Anyway, we had several babies with that, and I've had several friends with foals born like that. It's not serious and can be fixed, if it's dealt with immediately. The best way to deal with it is to keep them in a very small confined area, where they cannot exercise a lot. This allows the tendon to relax, and grow to catch up with the bone. The more exercise they get the more it will tighten and make the problem worse.
It can take awhile to straighten up, couple of weeks, and it's so hard to keep them confined like that:), it's so much fun to see them run and play. But that's about the only thing we were told that would fix it.
Becky
Do you have Microsoft office in there somewhere?
Okay, this is something I've never seen. I'm printing out your post to show Bob when he gets back. It won't hurt to lock him for awhile will it? I'm also going to do some research on this - at the very least maybe I can get Bob to call Bryan and talk to him about it.
LOL, now I'm worried I gave you bad advice, so I went and did some reading. I found the name for what I'm thinking it may be, contracted tendons. and it is caused from too rapid of bone growth vs. tendon growth, caused a lot of the times by too good of nutrition:), so it fits:) LOL, just teasing.
Being stalled is the best when the problem is not severe, and your foals legs doesn't come close to the ones my neighbor had, so I would say your foals legs are not severe. But that's JMO:)
Becky
I found it. It was under search on my old computer.
No it doesn't hurt to stall them. I had some friends who kept their foal stalled 2-3 weeks to get it's legs fixed. The horse was fine afterwards.
My neighbors had a foal, the first I'd seen with this problem, and it was pretty severe. The foal was their young daughters, and she didn't like keeping it stalled 24/7, altho that is what the vet recommended at the start, she'd turn it out for a few hours each day...of course the horse just ran and played, I don't think it makes them lame, but this horses legs are still crooked today, and it's 15 years old. After it's ran and played some, the bow gets more pronounced and her legs tremble for a while. They don't ride her.
Becky
Isn't the other leg that way too though?
It's really a relief though to think that you're right - I was imagining a broken leg or God knows what :) and having to put a foal down. Came back from the barn this morning in tears, so having a problem that we can fix sounds really good about now.
