This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I think there's so many, they'll come in and collect them. It's valuable timber to just let waste, plus, if you look in some of the backgrounds, a good number of standing but leaning trees that they'll probably take, too.
But yeah - I was amazed at the amount of trail clearing they've done already... the trails don't really even open (to horses) till April. But I guess they can't get in there to really survey it till they get it clear.
Wow, there really are a lot of downed trees, and branches:(. That will look different to Bay:).
Is it winter time that it doesn't look as full, or is it because of all the downed stuff. Will they just leave them there to rot, or will they be used for firewood, or something?
Becky
I think they'll go in and harvest it. Most of that is nearly mature timber. And I don't know for sure if it's just thin from winter or if there's a lot of missing trees, but I'll be able to tell, maybe this summer! Everywhere you looked there were trees down, it's not like I had to search for downed trees to take pictures of, it was like that the whole way.
First the before.
The red.
How it landed up.
Becky
Wow! That really was RED, you're right! Not sure I could ~sleep~ in there ;~)
The toned down but still warm earth tones are really nice. I like it a lot!
Big difference . I like the new color. I like the wedding ring spread best though.
Seriously, the room looks very, very nice!
Only 8 degrees here! Alison is home with me, because the whole County cancelled school. The snow stopped and there is probably 6 inches or so on the ground.
It's a *S*N*O*W* day!
Frigid here this am too. We only got about 3 inches of snow so the roads never got too bad. Didn't ride last night. Was 20 in the barn so I just cleaned stalls and went home.
No snow for us, but we have a nice, dry, sunny weekend ahead. We may go on another walk, a little further maybe, or maybe check out the other trailhead, except it's a heck of a climb out of there. But the walk felt good, and I think we could go further and it would do us good.
Honey wants to work on fencing projects and be responsible :~)
Great pics Hair! We've never seen your woods in winter. It looks so different, even without the downed trees. That's good about the salvage logging. That'll clean it up a lot and it's a shame for all that good timber to go to waste. Around here they just let it lay. The trail looked to be in pretty good shape too. They must've gotten out there right away and cut the trees off. Y'all must have some good forest managers out there. Is that trail closed to horses right now or could you have ridden it?
I should know by now to read first and ask questions later. Thanks!
Wow! I DEFINATELY like the "After". The red was interesting, but if you were using the same dark red bedspread and drapes with it it would have definately clashed. It looks much better with the earth-tone on the wall. It looks so cozy in there now. Good Job!
I heard about an awful snow-related 50-car pileup somewhere in PA last night. I worried about you when I heard it, so I'm glad to hear that you aren't anywhere near there. Did you hear about it?
Some of the BCH groups that have adopted trails are allowed in there before April to do the lighter duty cleanup, but winter is when they usually do the heavy maintenance like cutting big trees off the trail, repairing and replacing bridges, and building up low spots that get muddier. I'm actually impressed they had already gotten so much done! the storms were only what.... a month ago. We didn't see any hoof prints, but there were some bicycle tracks and feet.
I know it felt a lot brighter, the leafy things like the vine maple are all naked and so a lot more light gets in... plus the trees are thinner. As you looked off trail on either side it was like everywhere there was a tree down. Some of those areas are places where in summer, the pictures always used to turn out too dark.
Thanks. I'm much closer to Pgh than Erie. Saw pics of the accident on foxnews.com. They were terrible.
I'll bet a lot of the lighter feeling had to do with the limbs being ripped off the trees like they were in your yard. Even I could tell a difference in the pictures of the trees around your house, just based on the pictures you'd posted before. You could see a whole lot more daylight there too. But your hike sounded like fun. My riding buddy, Shirley, and I like to stop along the trail and tie the horses and walk off down in the hollows exploring in the wintertime when you can see where you're going and you don't have to worry about getting snake-bit or stepping in a yellowjacket nest. I'm ready for another ride down to some of the big cliffs. I was hoping to go tomorrow, but my Jeep computer died last night and I've got to get another one ordered. Maybe next weekend!
Wow, I just went to Fox news and read the story and it's just incredible that more people didn't get killed. There were mashed cars and trucks scattered all over everywhere. Jeeze Louise!
