The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

sure would enjoy that job you're in, more than the permanent job you're going to. It's too bad money's an object :~)

It is too bad, but I'm just not making enough money to pay my bills. But let me tell you, it's fantastic because she's willing to teach me everything. From how to do IVs to doing dental cleanings, to you name it. And I've really learned alot in the short time that I've been there. Now I can assist with surgeries without having to think twice about it. I don't think that I could be a certified vet, though, because I know that I'm not steady enough to do surgeries. The other day we had to do a tumor removal on an eyelid, and I don't know how she didn't manage to poke the actual eye when she was doing the sutures.

I have a pair of everyday men's workboots for mucking about in the barn, and a pair of insulated workboots for the winter that keep my feet beyond toasty. But when I ride I wear a pair of jodphur boots because they sure as heck beat pulling on a pair of tall boots, especially in the summer. I pull up my socks around my breeches so that I don't rub my ankle.

Much more comfortable! Pull my socks up over breeches, and then put on a pair of half chaps! That's the way!

I love half chaps. A lot of people at my barn do just that.

It's really nice looking :) and the added bonus of it won't show the dog hair since they match.

Very sad state of affairs here. It's been cold for soooo long that 36 degrees this afternoon felt warm, too warm for a jacket. I might as well live in Alaska or Canada - well, it might be warmer there.

You're acclimated.... Just imagine how good 36 would feel when it's 110 outside. :~)

We bought it to hide the dog hair ;~)

It'll be easy to wash and it'll protect our big comforter that's too big to wash easily.

It matches everyone but Cartman.

Well it generally doesn't get to 110 here, at least not before this year but who knows :) I think we're entering an ice age in Nevada.

I should rephrase that - it does get hot here but it doesn't feel like it because it's so dry, and it doesn't get that hot that often.

Well, he can provide a little contrast . . .

It really IS hard to see where Gidget ends and the comforter begins!

I have half chaps and lace-up packers, but I wear my high boots a lot (might as well use them).

But I was out taking a lesson this afternoon - and when I got off I discovered that the heel on one boot had come loose. So I guess I'll be wearing my laceups and half chaps again while they're at the shoe repair. Might as well have 'em re-dyed at the same time (BAD stirrup leather marks on the inside leg!)

Like most Lilac Points, her eyes are a little on the pale side. Seal Points have the darkest blue eyes, some are almost purple. My Blue Points probably had the closest to a true deep lapis lazuli blue.

We should make some plans to meet with our horses and go for a trail ride this year. Estogen lives North of me, so maybe we could get together, somewhere in the middle

That's a great idea! We could go to my cabin, I have lots of trails down there. It's one hr. from Akron and 20 miles west of Stuebenville. A little burg called Amsterdam. I have a trailer so if that's not convenient then we could meet somewhere...any ideas?

EXCITING NEWS.....we have been going down to Aiken SC to look at property and this past weekend we bought a 7 acre lot in an equestrian subdivision. The subdivision is 2100 acres with 30 miles of riding trails interspersed throughout the neighborhood. It is soooooooo cool. We are talking to builders now and hope to be ready to move permanently by next winter. I can't take the Ohio winters anymore and Aiken is such a neat town. Weather is mild, and it is a very horse friendly town. As a matter of fact, horrses have the right of way !!!!! There ae a lot of disciplines there: hunter jumpers, racing horses being trained, driving and just plain trail riding which is my interest. I will try to post a picture of rush hour in Aiken. The bank I work for has been bought by Huntington and considering that I do mortggage loans and the market as slow as it is, it is time for me to make a change. The market in Aiken is booming and I think I can do better down there. The idea is to work a few more yrs then retire. At that time, I'll spend winters in Aiken and summers at our cabin in southern Ohio. Keep your fingers crossed that it works like I hope it does.

The following link tells a little about aiken http://www.aikenchamber.net/about_aiken/equestrian-guide.shtml
