The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

How does she drive? It's my theory that horses who won't get in the trailer to go home have bad drivers.

You know, these horses have been in the barn most of the day. It wasn't even that bad out. They just like it in there. We had to kick them out this afternoon so they'd move around a little :~)

It's just so muddy around the paddock that once they slog through it to come in they're reluctant to go back out :~\ I can't wait till spring !

We went for a 'walk' today, we'd like to start doing that again, I'd really like to lose weight this spring. We went 4 times around the pasture and I think Beaker figured for us that was a mile. When we do that a few more times, I'd like to pick a nice day and go up to the trailhead we went to the second day and walk down to the river and back. No horses, it's still closed to horses. It's only about a mile, but there's that big hill.

I don't think she is a bad driver at all. One she can't go fast, her poor ole truck just won't do it. I had to turn her trailer around for her this afternoon, Charlie had the drive blocked putting new brakes on the work truck. I had to pull it forward and then back down our driveway to the barn, then pull out back straight, and her truck just has no power, I was a bit shocked about how little it had. I don't know how she gets going.

I've rode with her when she drives, and I don't remember her being jerky or anything...I don't know what she does that makes her horses not load well. It's a puzzlement:)

I can't wait for spring either. We're pretty muddy around here too, probably not as bad as you tho.

Walking is good, especially in the woods:). I walked alot back up in our woods, but have changed, because of the mud to walking up our road to the cul de sac and back, that's about a mile. That's actually a harder walk then the woods walk tho, because there are a lot more hills.

You will need to take some pictures when you go. Different prespective:)

I've been thinking about what you said about feeding the hay at night...I think even with the square bales that would be better. The night time is the longest stretch they have to go with nothing, so rather then cram feeding hay in between their regular feedings, I'm going to just make their regular feedings closer together, 8, 12, 4, then when I normally would go out to feed the last feeding, I'll throw them several blocks of hay. That will really be good for them when it's really cold....

What do you think?

I think the hay feeding sounds real good. If you throw plenty out there, they may have some to pick at during the day too.

We'll definitely take the camera (need you ask?) when we go to the woods. I'm wondering what it looks like up there in winter, let alone whether there may be storm damage and trees across the trail.

Well, it was just a theory on why they won't load. When we're out somewhere, I think ours know they're going home, and they're eager. But I see refusals at the trailheads sometimes, they get mad and finally get the horse in, and then tear out of there. I shake my head.

Good Morning.

Happy Friday!

Rather gloomy and raining this morning. But, temps in the low 50's. So hard to believe it's January.

The tail-less one on the left is the first cat that Cav gave me year before last. He's 6 yrs old. The two tail-less kittens that I got from him this past fall are cute as buttons too and are really growing. They're at the barn and really seem to enjoy it. I'll have to take some pictures of them sometime soon.

It poured down here yesterday afternoon and all last night so it's pretty muddy here too, but the low was 60 degrees and the high may hit 70 today because it's supposed to clear up. So it's an unusual January indeed! But I love it. I can do with out frozen water troughs.

Good morning... We've got calm now, but rain and somewhat high winds coming this morning through tonight... we'll just have to see if we get to use our generator again :~)

Please add me! Just getting the hang of posting. Just moved to Texas and feeling VERY homesick for my horses and my farm back in Canada. Sigh. Love the pics!

Well, I for one will keep my fingers crossed that you don't. They got some pretty bad storms farther south of here, down where BladeRider lives, but no tornadoes that I know of. Just high winds and lightning.

BladeRider hasn't been on here in quite a while. I think her work is pretty hectic right now with year-end type stuff.

Well, The power outage part is a little bit fun like camping, I'm just, as always, hoping our trees don't come down :~\

Hullo Bladerider, check in when you can!

It looks nice here today. Hope it stays that way awhile. I'm in a wait and see position on the estrogen. There has to be a better way though. If I had a place , there would be a few rescues around. I think I would be good at healing and finding homes for them.

Welcome to the thread and welcome to the U.S. Nanster! I saw your post over on the PMU thread. I hate it for the farmers that the bottom has fallen out of their business, but I can't really say that I'm sorry that that particular method of horsekeeping is coming to an end. It'll be interesting to watch the comments on that thread.

Is your move to Texas a permanent one or will you be going back to your farm in Canada? Tell us about your place and your horses. We'd love to see pictures if you have them. There're good instructions on how to post them up at the top of the thread if you don't already know how.
