The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thinkin' of you and alfalfa... the new hay we bought is not all orchard grass, it's obviously a grass/alfalfa mix. Just how much higher in protien is alfalfa? I've not fed it ever, and I wonder if I'll over-fuel the pony, or Bay for that matter. Should I cut down on their grain? Pony only gets a little bit anyway, half a small coffee can (maybe a cup) just enough that she thinks she's getting something at feeding time. And Bay, well, I'd just increased his grain, was feeding him up because he was looking a little ribby earlier.

...they play with whatever toys make themselves available.

Tell me about it! On Saturday evening I had to drive our old truck to go feed because Lee had gone to town in the Jeep. Well, most of the time it stays at my FIL's place, and consequently the bed of it is full of all kinds of junk. So when I pull in the pasture and up to the barn, all the horses, and Bob in particular, start having a field day rooting around in all that stuff. They had old plastic oil jugs and coke bottles strowed everywhere! They even found an old piece of plastic sheeting and had that out on the ground. The little buggers!

Hey everyone, hope that all is well!

Guess what? I got the job that I interviewed for! They called me back two days later, and boom... now I've got a job.

Thanks! :-D

Oh, and I've started going back to the barn. I rode for the first time in ten months as of Friday, and the next day I felt like I had been hit by a truck! I go back Wednesday and Friday. The funny part is that I got a call from HR with the job offer when I was tacking up a horse for my trainer. So the HR woman could hear all kinds of horse noises in the background and there was a pause in the middle of her spiel and she said "... Um... where are you?" But I still got the job.

Well, you don't want to feed alfalfa free choice. It looks like you put out close to a bale of hay each morning, that's a bit much if it's alfalfa. You only want to give them about 6-8" each. Alfalfa has about 13-14% protien I think. Giving them too much could cause diarreha. If you don't give them a whole lot of hay, their grain should be okay where it is.

Well, how much we put out varies (we put out a lot when there's snow and cold and absolutely no other forage) but we have been feeding really fat portions. These bales are not consistent. It's like some of the bales were from near the alfalfa end of the field and some are mostly grass. We'll keep an eye out.

They've been leaving the alfalfa stems on the floor. But eating the leafy bits, I imagine.

Good evening:)

Congratulations Beaker:).

Hair: I'm getting ready to watch 24, so I don't have time to let your pictures load, but will leave them to load during the show, then come back and look:)

Busy day, ran errands with Jenny, and then this evening started painting my bedroom. Ice still covering the ground, but it is melting some every day. Should all be gone by the end of the week, but the mud will be horrible for a while.

Good morning,
Someone, I think it was CindyDawg, mentioned she was hula hooping for exercise recently. Decided to look into it and I got myself a 3lb adult size hoop. Turns out it's a lot of fun and great exercise but my pudge is as sore as can be from the hoop rolling over it. Hopefully I can toughen up the flab as I lose it.

Winter has finally come to western PA. Some snow on the ground and an inch more expected today. Thank goodness for the indoor arena. We can keep working horses.

I hope you work faster than we do. We have been "working" on our bathroom about 13 years!

I'd hula hoop as long is I was absolutely certain no one was watching... or especially filming :~)

Gonna be a little dry here this week. I worked yesterday on my rockery and made some flower beds up by the house where it was just plain rocks before. Now if it was only warm enough to buy flowers! I'm ready for spring!

But if this weather holds, I'm going to make sure Bay works a bit... for this month I'd like to get him moving as often as possible, some collection work like poles that make him pick his back up... no rider yet, just working him up slowly after a winter off.
