The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

...His dad had already lost a wife to cancer and he had married MUCH younger, then Glenda got cancer ..

That's so sad! I'll bet he thought that God had it in for him. It would be hard not to. I'm glad to hear that he's coming around. Life's too short to be living in the past.

I used to get miffed at the squirrels too, then I started feeding THEM. As long as I keep their squirrel feeders full of corn and sunflower seeds, they pretty much leave my feeders alone.

The doves get into the squirrel feeder! Turnabout is fair play..

Oh dear! Aren't those funny! It doesn't even look like there's anything to get in there! Did you give him some for all that effort? :~)

I feed the squirrels, if birds get some too, that's fine. :~)

He did wobble a wee bit in his faith .. hit the bottle HEAVY and second guessed everything he ever did, felt guilty about every time he might have treated her less than fairly, etc.

Thank God, he's coming around. He bought a motorcycle, joined CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Assn), found some good buddies to ride with, and is actually spending a little more time with my hubby .. They are planning a weekend CMA rally in May.

You know, I just had a thought (amazing I know). You ought to grease the pole on that shepherd's hook. My mother ended up having to grease the wire to the feeder hanging from the tree in her back yard. She started out with a chain. But of course the squirrels could shimmy down that thing in like 2 seconds. So she switched to smooth aluminum clothesline wire, but they could still hold on to that. So we coated it with Vaseline and that did the trick. They'd get on that stuff and go sliding down it so fast that they'd hit the top of the feeder and just keep going. It was kinda funny. They'd be on the ground, looking up like "What just happened?!"

You're right one of those feeders has a hole chewed in it, and it is now laying on the ground.

I feel bad, I'm out of seed, and Walmart is out too...

I just saw TWO pileated woodpeckers on the same tree, but couldn't get a picture:(

LOL, I'll have to give that a try, just ot keep them from eating the feeders. If I have seed, I put enough on the ground to satisfy them, it's just I'm out of feed right now.

It should. I'd imagine that they'd eat anything like that right now as hungry as they are.

Squirrels can and will eat almost anything when they are hungry .. they are rodents. Dog or cat food will even work. Birds on the other hand ...

Feeding squirrels is about like paying off the Mafia...once you start, you can't stop, or they'll destroy everything you have. ;o)
