The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I just get to feeling really bad for poor Harley:), (I know he doesn't care tho), but I kept Belle pristine, all year round. Her mane and tail were shampooed and conditioned once a week, even in the winter, she got rode as much in the winter as in the summer....blankets in the winter, (which I may start doing now, just to keep him clean).

Oh well....maybe I can get back in that groove now, barring anymore broken arms, poison ivy, and hurt backs....geeze, it seemed everytime I'd get going this past year, I always got roadblocked. Ok, I'll quit feeling sorry for myself now:)

It'll be interesting to see how long they last doing it that way.

We've been feeding a lot of hay at night when it's cold... I might consider reversing when you give them access to the round bale. Let them nibble all night, since your riding time will cut into the day anyhow, and he may not have a full stomach yet in the morning. It might work out that if they've been eating all night and you pen them in and feed breakfast a few hours before you ride he'll be just about the right amount of fueled up and digested then. I dunno, just food for thought.

Aside from the dirt, I don't think he looks that bad at all. He's not ribby or anything. I'll bet he'll tone right back up when you get him back to work.

...They'll get turned out thru the day to eat on them, and then locked up in their runs at night...

Any particular reason for that? I just let mine have access to the rolls all the time. They'll eat on them for a while, then go out and pick at what little grass is out there for a while, then come back in and eat on the rolls some more. Just curious is all.

Mainly to keep them from eating them up to fast....they really don't need it for nutrition, they just need something to satisfy the grazing instinct.

I hope to only have to buy 2 for the winter:), I'm cheap.

We had a good ride. Did about 2 hours, and climbed one really long hill. Harley didn't really even seem tired when we got back, but Celia's horse was. But this is only his 2nd trail ride ever, and he was barefoot.

So Harley's not as soft as you think :~)

Will Celia compete on this new horse this year? Or the grey?

I think she would like to compete on the new horse. But she'd pretty much have to go novice because he is so green as far as things like side passing, backing, etc...She doesn't like novice tho. She's always said she gets more sore going novice then in open, because in open you move out more so you're posting/standing in the saddle. So I'm not sure what she will do.

That you Duchess? I don't think I've seen a pic before. I like that horse, esp her head. You still have her?

Thanks Cindy, I guess it's just more that he's lost muscle tone to me. Maybe something that doesn't show in a picture, and with all his winter coat.

LOL:) yeah I guess.

I think she'd go novice on the new guy. The biggest draw back with him will be doing the obstacles. He seems like a really really nice horse. LOL...he does have the Celia trademark tho...he doesn't load well. Took her about 15 minutes to get him in, and that done with her holding the feed bucket and me whipping him in the butt. She says he'll run right in at home to eat, she feeds him in there, which proves my belief that feeding them in the trailer doesn't work.

That was Lady (Little Bit Dusty)1985 Appaloosa mare - my riding mare. We bought her severely foundered but got her sound with corrective shoeing. We finally had to put her down a few years ago because she was so crippled she couldn't walk.
