In the sky! A bird? A plane? A ... UFO? (Over O'Hare)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 1 January 2007 | Jon Hilkevitch

It sounds like a tired joke--but a group of airline employees insist they are in earnest, and they are upset that neither their bosses nor the government will take them seriously.

A flying saucerlike object hovered low over O'Hare International Airport for several minutes before bolting through thick clouds with such intense energy that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies, said some United Airlines employees who observed the phenomenon.

Officials say rescue teams have been dispatched to find a Indonesian passenger jet carrying 102 people after contact was lost during a flight Monday.

Indonesia's transportation minister Hatta Radjasa says a distress signal was detected from the northern island of Sulawesi.

Air traffic controllers say they lost contact with the Adam Air Boeing 737 jet while it was flying at 10,000 meters. Ninety six passengers and a crew of six, including 11 children were on board.

Air traffic controllers say the plane was in the middle of a two-hour flight, from Surabaya in east Java to Mandao on the northern tip of Sulawesi, when contact was lost.

Adam Air is a privately owned, low-cost airline that began operations in Indonesia several years ago. Most of its flights are domestic.

Last year, one of Adam Air's jetliners lost all communication and navigation systems during a flight between the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and Makassar on Sulawesi Island, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing.

This is a serious question:

Are there any confirmed incidents of planes being sucked into a meteorological vortex in earth orbit? Such as a tornado or other phenomenon?

Most people? Puh-leeze. Sure they do.

I'm not sure what you are asking. If there was any vortex I don't see it sucking you into space as it will be a low pressure system which would mean an even lower differential pressure between you and space (which is obviously overcome normally by gravity which holds our atmosphere on the planet). As far as the vortex giving enough kinetic energy? It seem extremely unlikely since any spacecraft needs to be traveling at least Mach 25 to go into orbit (less to briefly go into space). It is extraordinarily difficult to go even faster than Mach 1 through the atmosphere due to atmospheric resistance (the Space Shuttle uses about half of its fuel doing just that). You can go faster above the lower parts of atmosphere (like the Space Shuttle), but then you have lost the force that would be pushing you since you aren't going to have wind in a vacuum.

Thank you.

To an uninformed amateur's question - your answer added gravitas.

It is appreciated.

(I forgot about gravity;)

"I was going to post this sooner, but I thought no one would believe me."

You are not alone.

Years ago at a family picnic, I left the group and went mountain climbing. I sat down to rest and looking up in the sky, I saw a silver object stationary in one spot. I couldn't guess its size because of lack of perspective but it looked to be the size of a qurter held at arms length. I ran back to the group (it took about 10 minutes) and when I told my Dad about it he scoffed and said I was hallucinating.

I know what I saw and watched that thing for at least 5 minutes. It moved slowly at first then zipped off at a fantastic speed.

I'll swear on a stack of bibles that it is the truth but seldom mention the event.

You said it APPEARS credible? Did you see a video or something?

Or does is SOUND credible? Meaning, you are judging by what was SAID in the interview?

I don't SEE anything that LOOKS credible.

I once saw one of these or that answers the description pretty well. I happened to have my telescope with me and got a good view of it including when the balloon exploded and put pieces all over the field of view. To the others it looked like it merely disappeared.

From an AP story about this published in the Wash Post today:

At least one O'Hare controller, union official Craig Burzych, was amused by it all.

"To fly 7 million light years to O'Hare and then have to turn around and go home because your gate was occupied is simply unacceptable," he said.

Simple. To keep them quiet. The aliens made a deal that if some of us keep the rest quiet, that we can die 'later.' Not exactly sure what that means, but it certainly has to be better than 'sooner.'

"Interesting that no one could find a camera or a camera-cellphone at an airport."

Also interesting that most victims of various crimes are too preoccupied to dig out their cell phone and record the incident. /sarc off

All joking aside, it was an uncalled-for sentiment. "Beat" the witnesses? Why don't we see if they float like witches, too...

One question. Does Chicago O'hare not have TSA or some kind of security? If so, where were they?

Newspapers reporting anonymous witnesses is no evidence.

>> Well, apparently, it was a UFO. UFO means Unidentified Flying Object. If no one knows what it is, isn't it "unidentified?"<

My father worked for the FAA. Several years ago, a book the name of which I have forgotten, caused quite a stir with supposedly earth-shaking declassified documents proving the feds have known about UFOs and have been covering them up for a long, long time. The "documents" were actual transcripts, etc. about actual "UFOs." The problem is that such UFOs were simply any aircraft flying without a US-recognized transponder. At the time, that typically meant Cuban MiGs.
