NEW YORK - Randy Johnson could be leaving the New York Yankees after just two seasons.

The Yankees have started trade talks with several teams, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, although it is too early to tell whether the discussions will lead to a deal.

Talks were confirmed yesterday by a baseball official who had knowledge of them and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are in the preliminary stage. The Yankees’ discussions with the Diamondbacks, Johnson’s

Is the Big Stein saying goodbye to the Big Unit?

Steinbrenner brought him in to win a World Series and end the Curse of the Hildabeast. No such luck, and Johnson's gotta be slowing down over 40. Might as well get some value in a trade while he can. Clemens and Schilling can still bring it, but they're slowing down too.

Now if they could only get rid of "the Curse of the A-Rod"

Curse of Hillary you mean. They were losing before she showed up.

The fact that A-Rod hasn't been able to produce on the big stage is shocking to me. As a Red Sox fan, I thought it was all over when the Yanks got Gay-Rod.

His back hurts and his body is just breaking down. He cannot seem to get it going early in the season and by September he is falling apart.

He was a hell of a pitcher in his day though!

If value's the name of the game, Big Stein will almost definitely have to ship the Big Unit back to the National League, where he'll only have to pitch against 7/9ths of a line-up. Sounds like the Big Unit's back is getting ready to blow for good . . .

If I'm Steinbrenner, I'd ship him quick. Clemens didn't even re sign with the Astros until June, giving him an extra 3 months of rest. The Yankees don't have that luxury with the Red Sox and Blue Jays nipping at their heels. I'd try and get rid of Johnson before pitchers and catchers report and other scouts get a good look at him. And like you said, unless the Rangers or Angels want to overpay another fading star, it's going to have to be the National League.

Also, I wouldn't be too surprised if Boston tries to unload Schilling if the Sox have another Mid-Summer Meltdown. The Sox can no longer expect Kurt to carry the load by himself like he did in 2004.

I could be wrong, but I believe this is Schilling's last year under contract with the Red Sox, and I think he's retiring from baseball when it's over. Therefore, I doubt they'd try to move him because they couldn't.

Skank fans have an annual ritual concerning the "big acquisition" that makes the upcoming year's team the best team in Skank history. It has really peaked in the last several seasons with the signing of A-Fraud and the Big-Freak but goes back to Mussina.

I can remember my Skank fan friends dancing for joy when they signed A-Fraud saying they would win 108 games that season.

Matter of fact many of their big signings/trades have been differing degrees of flops: Mussina, A-Fraud, Contreras, Big Ugly, Pavano, Hidecki Irabu, Kevin Brown, Jaret Wright, Giambi(on and off), (sure there are more).

Fortunately for Skank fans their team has had the resources to go out and fix the problems caused by their bad moves and, of course, they have made other big moves where the guy has performed the way they expected (Damon, Sheffield, Matsui, Abreu for example) .

Four outstanding acquisitions, those.

Jeter, of course, is indispensable, and it's sad to see the rest of that Yankee team go slowly to the dogs around him. They seem to be freelancers incapable of understanding what being a Yankee means to major league baseball. Even a Sox fan like me can appreciate the greatness that a man like Jeter brings to the diamond.

for Red Sox fans: yes we can boo Johnson for signing with the Yankees in the first place but remember, he & Curt helped
to beat the Yanks in the '01 Series...

6 years is a lifetime in professional athletics. It's clear that neither man is the pitcher he was in '01. That being said, I'm not blaming Johnson for signing with the Damn Yankees. If Steinbrenner wants to throw all that cash at him, it's hard not to take it from King George. At least the Sox got a pretty good return on their investment in Schilling.

CNNSI, Steve Phillips of ESPN, and a reporter who appeared on SNY's "Daily News Live" seem to think that once the Yankees trade Johnson, they'll make a big-time run at Zito. Phillips said, "Whatever the Mets offer, teh Yankees will be one dollar higher."

A rotation of Zito, Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, and Igawa looks pretty tough.

Arizona is not the only team interested. According to Rotoworld, the San Diego Padres may be the frontrunner right now becauase they apparently are willing to put Scott Linebrink in the deal.

It does. I've always been a big fan of Zito's.

Randy Johnson is washed up and I will be glad to see him go. The title of the article must be wishful thinking from the Boston Rag.

Might be more than just wishful thinking. From ESPN:

The Yankees are discussing dealing Johnson with the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, the chief contenders for the 43-year-old left-hander, who has been a disappointment during his two seasons in New York.
