Two issues, his age and the teacher/student relationship. While 17 is fairly old the fact he was a student makes her a predator.
Teachers who prey on their students are not cute, or misunderstood. They are predators with a severe lack of morals, judgement and self control. Obviously she is not mentally stable enough to be allowed uncontrolled access to children. She risked her entire career and relationship with her family to do this. That is not something a stable person would do.

all joking aside, I agree with you. the 'position of authority' is the main point.if a boss did this to an employee, society wouldn't tolerate that either.(exception being if they're Congresscritters or Presidents)

Except for the voting part, I did all three when I was 17.
I don't know about the child part. 17 is old enough to be in the military. I joined the military when I was 17 years and 3 months old. The teacher abusing her position of authority is a problem that seems to be growing and should be prosecuted to deter others in the future. Regardless of the age of their partners, I do not think it is OK for teachers to ever have sex with students.
