I agree, it's unusual that the scam would continue after two and 1/2 years, in multiple locations. I don't doubt that Walmart would own up for the loss of money when pressed. The point is, the old timers in this story should press Walmart harder.
The link you posted is exactly on point - these two stories are very similar, so there is no reason they shouldn't pursue it with Walmart.
