It seems to be a problem with the Mesquite police. Several years ago, my parents got a call from The Room Store asking what time they wanted the furniture delivered. Not having ordered anything, they had no clue what they were talking about. It seems a black woman had purchased a houseful of furniture and paid with my Mom's new checks that had come in the mail (but Mom hadn't received.) The Room Store calling saved them much money because my Dad put a stop payment on the checks immediately.

That wasn't the end, though. The woman got credit cards with the ID and new bank account with new checks. The mail and phone calls just kept coming. My Dad lived at the police station trying to get something done about it. The cops knew who she was, but said they couldn't do anything then, either.

After many months, I can't remember exactly how long, the woman started paying her water bill to the City of Mesquite with the bad checks. After 3 checks to the city, the cops finally arrested her.

I'm so glad. I hope I can somehow stop this from happening to others. I hope this gets passed to everybody in that area so they don't get ripped off by that woman.

If she does this very often, it could be that the cop is usually the same one who is called and is in on the shakedown for a cut by not pursuing the complaint.

He could he keeping her indebted to him for that, in return for not turning her in. He goes back and gets his couple of $100 from her and everyone's happy.

I would go to the local media, the chief of police, and local and state government officials -- quick and hard.

Read what I wrote!

" If the clerk was not smart, his card would still have his finger prints on it? "

The clerk has his original card, correct?

Oh, and it turned out the woman's sister?... friend? somebody.. anyway, she had an accomplice that worked at the USPS. That's how they knabbed the checks. My mother's ID wasn't the only one swiped.

Yes, the clerk has the original card, but they wouldn't search her to find it.

And she's sold or traded it for drugs by now.

Seems strange that someone would place their job in jeopardy for such a scheme but I quit wondering about some folks a lot of years ago.

I don't suppose anyone here knows anybody that works for Murphy Oil to find out if the missing last four digits is the truth or not?

Yes, we figure she probably had somebody come and pick up the card immediately.

We also wonder if the machines in the booth show the balance on the card used, so she knew that one had $414 on it, or is she's just picking on the elderly thinking them less likely to notice.

I REALLY wish somebody would set up a sting and catch her red-handed in the act and lead her off in cuffs.

Well, when the gift scam surfaced in 2004, this is what Walmart said:

“Wal-Mart says if you learn your card has been hit, you should have no problem getting your money as long as you have the receipt to verify the transaction. The receipts record the exact date, time and code number of the card transaction, as well as codes showing where the cards were both purchased and redeemed.”

A corporate spokesman says the company, " is working with law enforcement at the highest levels possible, to rectify the problem and catch the people responsible."

You can read more about it here.

So the question is, why is this still happening? I can't believe that Walmart would want to sabotage itself during the busiest time of the year, and after they have said they were looking into it over 2 1/2 years ago, it makes you wonder, doesn't it?

I suspect that if the door was padlocked, just shaking a gas can
(filled with water) and a lighter might do the trick.

Of course, I DO NOT recommend that or any other actionable form of
threat or violence.

Taking this matter to the media is the next step if WalMart/MurphyOil
and the Mesquite PD sit on their thumbs. IMHO.

I also sent the story to a family member who retired from the Mesquite Police years ago. I'm almost sure everyone has changed in the department since he was there but you never know. Maybe he still has contacts there. At any rate, best of luck. That would be a bunch of bucks for this old retiree to lose.

One of my daughters simply "lost" $120.00 as the mag strip on the back of the card got scratched.

Lessoned learned. No more "stupid" cards.

Its just so much invisible cash on a random piece of plastic that anyone can use with prior approval. That along with the mechanics of the deal make it very unappealing. This goes for Pizza Hut and Sonic cards as well.

CASH CASH CASH

Make as big a stink as it takes to make this right!

I agree, it's unusual that the scam would continue after two and 1/2 years, in multiple locations. I don't doubt that Walmart would own up for the loss of money when pressed. The point is, the old timers in this story should press Walmart harder.

The link you posted is exactly on point - these two stories are very similar, so there is no reason they shouldn't pursue it with Walmart.
