Call it a case of suburbia red in tooth and claw. Young Chris Campo had to fight a wild beast for his puppy’s life on Friday when a red-tailed hawk tried to turn the Weston youngster’s Dachshund into dinner. But a well-placed kick by the courageous Campo to the hawk’s head freed 5-month-old Dimi, who quickly high-tailed it to safety. “I took the dog out to go to the bathroom and he started to run around like he was kind of scared,” said the 11-year-old Weston Middle School sixth-grader. “I felt a tug (on the leash) and I look back and a hawk was on the back of my dog, trying to eat him.” While the dog was yelping, Chris stepped on the bird’s wing, reared back and let loose with a kick at the hawk’s head, he said. The ravenous raptor did not let go at first and so hawk, dog and child started madly struggling until the dog broke loose. “I didn’t really think - I just turned around and kicked the bird,” he said. “My dog was being attacked.” Charles Campo said his son was outside their home for about 30 seconds when he heard the boy yell. “I go outside and there was this enormous red-tailed hawk,” said Charles Campo.“It was trying to carry the dog off, and my son wouldn’t let go and he fought off the hawk. My son was literally fighting a hawk. I was stunned.”

I had a bird swoop down and try to take the button off of the top of my baseball cap once. It must have thought it was some sort of insect, probably a beetle. It really startled me.
Unless you've had it happen to you it sounds crazy, but once you've experienced it becomes totally believable.
We have a hawk or two that run regular routes over my neighborhood. They keep the stray cat poulation in check.
What the boy did is not in violation of the statute you posted.
True story. Yesterday afternoon (Saturday) I was driving on I-95 north from Baltimore along a long, straight, down hill grade of highway and saw a flock of birds flying back and forth across the highway.
Numbering at least two-dozen, they were flying from the trees on one side then immediately turning and flying back to the trees on the other side. It looked like they were swooping down pretty close to road in my northbound lane but the grade made it difficult to tell. I did however see break lights coming on ahead of me. I saw them make about six passes before I came up on them.
When I got to where they were flying back and forth, I could see they looked like pigeons and they came down right in front of me at about windshield height. I thought I was going to hit some of them when they suddenly flew up.
Were these birds suicidal or did they have more malevolent intentions? I don’t know but it was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen. Strange enough that I was almost tempted to stop and take a picture with my cell phone. I felt a bit like Tippi Hedren.
I’ve never really trusted birds, as they are probably the descendents of T-Rex. I’m also suspect of circus clowns and monkeys, especially flying monkeys.
