Thank WB...I think we get taken off into specific directions on the thread and the bigger picture is muddled.

You are very right.

One of the things that keeps bothering me...

Everyone seems to know how bad this route is.
Everyone seems to know you shouldn't do what the Kim's

However I know of three similar situations in this specific area where in two of cases fatalities occurred because of the time it took to search "roads".

Why aren't the maps absolutely clear?

Why isn't it part of the training of every hotel in the area to discuss the issue during the winter with people that make reservations - especially for a guest that has never stayed there before.

Why don't the gas stations all put up signs with a specific warning about the roads?

Why after 11 years of situations in this area that I know of this could possible still be a problem?

Why aren't the vandals dealt with properly?

I have heard the county is very poor in regards to Federal funding, etc...

But something really needs to be done to help others. There is a family without a father this Christmas because they made a wrong turn down a road that should have never happened.

I think that is the best suggestion that has come out of this so far.

Why not instruct all hotel or reservations operators to ask one simple question during the call for reservations?

"Have you stayed with us before" If the answer is "Yes", the second question would be "In the winter?"

Good idea and costs not one penny.

The only hole in it is that a lot of reservations are made now days over the Internet through third parties.

It would be easy to have the computer pop up a window that says "After October 15th, never ever use any road other than XXX to reach our lodge" but there would be no way to know that the person read it or comprehended the dangers.

But it is a good idea in the right direction. As for the map people, I would expect that this event will raise the legal liability to a level that will bring some action on mapping responsibly. This has caused so much national anguish that something is going to change.

Regarding bad roads: Where I used to work, I drove a mountain road to get to my assignment. That road would sometimes be impassable from either snow or falling rocks. They used to have one of those freeway-type lighted road signs with changing info. (like the signs used for missing kids) which clearly noted road conditions. They warned people of snow, rocks or the road being closed part way up due to never-ending repairs. The alternate routes were many, many miles out of the way, but we would gladly go around if we knew to expect problems.

If there are so many lost people on the road the Kims took(not an issue on my road due to no side roads to speak of),that type of sign might be best, though probably astronically expensive. With all the boondoggle grants out there and pork projects, their congresscritters could probably get some funding.
