Why???
To: my_pointy_head_is_sharp
Good, maybe this will push the Brits over the edge so they become french.... and we can take their advice as serious as we take french advice.

Why would we be spying on Princess Diana's phone conversations?
To: my_pointy_head_is_sharp
I read this on Drudge and as odd as we were easdroppin we were listening the day she died....gives me the creeps given Clinton was in office.

Clinton was in office That's an interesting point.

Diana's phone or the hotel's phone she was using while she was there?

"Why would we be spying on Princess Diana's phone conversations?"
The answer probably lies in Dodi's connections, especially in those he supported financially.
To: _Jim
Guess we'll have to wait until they release the report this week.
To: RightOnTheLeftCoast
Then why wouldn't we have bugged Dodi's phone, and not Diana's?
To: my_pointy_head_is_sharp
They are still investigating this?!!

This is going to further inflame Dodi Fayed's father.
To: advertising guy
nothing nefarious in her death I'll never forget the icy chill emanating from the Queen herself when she appeared on television following Diana's death. It chilled me to the core.
To: my_pointy_head_is_sharp
Because she was dating an Islamic dude and she was privy to British Secrets. Brits didn't want the liability so they shopped it to us.

Interesting that the article refers to the "American secret service," the "US security service," and the "surveillance arm of the US," but fails to mention any US agency by name. Also they wrote M15 for MI5, which is just lazy. Anyhoo, Diana was no longer royal, wasn't performing any official business for the UK government, and wasn't in UK territory at the time she died. Does that make her fair game for espionage? Perhaps. But I've got no idea what information she could possibly have had. Maybe we were actually spying on the Fayeds? That would be just as strange.
To: my_pointy_head_is_sharp
The American secret service was bugging Princess Diana's telephone conversations . . Sounds like Bill Clinton wanted to get into Diana's panties.

Dodi had some land holdings in Los Angeles at the time and was getting money together to start producing movies with foreign investors. I remember reading in the Hollywood Reporter a couple weeks before his death that he wanted to start his own movie studio: A cover to finance other things, perhaps?? Who knows.....
As for Diana.....maybe they were afraid of the same pillow talk that got Marilyn in trouble.... ;)
