Why is this any different than generic horror movies? I'm not getting why Gibson is being criticized for something the makers of "Saw" or "Hostel" don't get criticized for.

Who needs to state the obvious?! Hello! What's so hard to understand about that?

As best as I can see, no one is doing any psychoanalysis on the makers of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

The 'other guys' are usually very upfront as to their motives. What's interesting here with Mel is that his dark side is becoming more and more exposed.

How does an historical (with creative license) depiction show its producer's 'dark side?" Did you see Braveheart, Passion of the Christ or Patriot? Or, did you see, from other, more 'acceptable' sources, Saving Private Ryan?
All damned bloody movies, but within range of historical.

Much of our history is dark, and if some hadn't sacrificed ALL, none of us would be sitting here fat and lazy behind our computers in a free country.
