My guess is that the Spanish had to use persuasive methods to make it clear to the locals that they were not going to participate in the temple rituals :)
Cannons and swords can be very persuasive.

And again...can you imagine seeing a demonstration of cannon fire and explosives for the first time.
It would be the same as you and I witnessing a successful ray gun that vaporizes the target...uh, like in the movies! ;^)
