You do? I bring a GPS with topo maps whenever I travel in unfamiliar areas.
If he couldn't get a consistent cell phone signal (yes there was a ping but not a consistent signal) then he probably couldn't get a signal from the GPS satellite either. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
