ORLANDO, Fla. - Darren McFadden of Arkansas won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back on Thursday night.

McFadden, a Heisman Trophy finalist, set a school record with 1,558 yards rushing and scored 16 touchdowns to help Arkansas reach the Southeastern Conference title game.

"This is a tremendous honor because I know there are a lot of great running backs out there," McFadden said. "It means a whole to me because in the SEC, it's hard to rack up yards. It just shows how big of an accomplishment it is."

The sophomore beat out Michigan's Mike Hart and West Virginia's Steve Slaton and became the first Arkansas player to win the Doak Walker Award, which dates to 1990.

McFadden will be in New York on Saturday for the Heisman presentation.

USC's Reggie Bush won the Doak Walker last season.

The award is named after three-time SMU All-American running back and 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker.

Isn't this season's winner announced before Jan 1st? I know T Smith will win this year, and he deserves it. Next year is Mcfadden's time.

Sorry I misread what ya said :) You're right....It will come down between McFadden and Mike Hart and John David Botty next year.

I have to admit that Harvin was pretty impressive in the SEC Championship, but can he throw a TD pass? I think not. Mcfadden is the ultimate blend of power, speed, elusiveness. Makes quite a nice receiver out of the backfield as well. Hop on this Heisman train because it's pullin' out soon.

My only concern about Harvin is can he stay healthy. He had to sit out of practice today.

Yeah, he's slight, but man, his speed is rare. Maybe some time in the weight room this off season will "fatten" him up a bit.
