"I don't know about sadists, but they do attract social misfits."

Social misfits are in every profession, hell, just look at our congress. This is a long way from police who "relish the opportunity to commit murder".

jjm2111, I don't see how we can evaluate this with the information given. I can see that PD's ought to make publicly available what criteria they have for deploying "elite" forces and the rest of it. It does seem that they were invited to the party by the University Police, so somebody thought it was going to get nasty.

You are right. There really isn't enough information to go on in this instance. But "elite" is not a term I would use for many SWAT forces and the employment of poorly trained SWAT teams is becoming somewhat edemic.

I think it is important for police forces to be able to react to badguys and sometimes, for their protection, they have to don the ninja suits and break out the MP5s. But it is overkill to use it in every situation and from what I read in articles it is being used way, way, too often.

Cato wrote a white paper called: Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America and you can read the full report in a pdf format.

I'm not close enough to this problem to see all the answers (or even to really understand all the questions), but I think this country is heading in the wrong direction with regards to police tactics. The ninja suits, the masks, the us-vs.-them mentality that many cops have has got to go.

I'm getting REALLY TIRED of cops saying they "thought" he had a gun so they took his life.....they need to determine that he has one or not....none of this excuse for shooting an unarmed person by saying they "thought" he was armed......

Why do they always have to kill the dog??? Why??? Poor guy probably didn't do anything. If you or I shoot a dog for no reason we're going to jail for cruelty to animals.

It's a shame in any event. If the dog didn't bark or growl, didn't engage in any threatening behavior, but ran away with its tail between its legs, then it's wrong. But once the cops assume that this is a sitiuation calling for dynamic entry, it would be foolish to allow their attention to be diverted by a dog.

As for plea bargains being effective for the DA: You want ineffective DAs? Maybe you could be clearer about what you mean? DAs can't treat every case like it's the only case they have. Taxpayers won't pay for enough personnel and enough court rooms to treat every prosecution like it's the only one. That being so, how should the DA proceed? This is the real world here, not TV. Jury trials are usually crap shoots. The DA has got to play the odds and to allocate resources. It's not a job I'd like.

Stealing a PS3 is worthy of a death sentence without trial?

He beat some poor kid and stole his PS3, then probably resisted arrest in some way. Daddy's a lawyer - he had all the breaks. Boo-hoo. Too bad.

Personally, I have more sympathy for a poor kid who grows up in the ghetto and gets killed in a drug bust.

Thank you VERY much for the source! I'll be very interested, I really appreciate it.

I have no clue how to be prepared for the really bad guys and stay mellow for the not so bad guys.

One of the nicest older cops I know just got out of a lawsuit about a police killing. Conclusion: You just can't win. If you didn't see this guy's uniform, you'd think he was your grandmother. He's just a VERY nice and gentle guy. But a domestic turned VERY bad unexpectedly and very fast. My guy didn't even shoot, he just tussled, but he was sued just the same. He's not all that well off, but he's got lawyer bills now.

I hope this story develops

Is it possible that your views are distorted from personal experience with the law?

LOL, I know what you are trying to imply, scumbag. But yes, my personal experience has a lot to do with this. My mom was a ICU/trauma/ER nurse. She would relate thousands of cases over her career where a drunk driver who was pulled over by the cops, no accident involved and a non-belligerent patient who had the crap kicked out of them by sadistic cops. People with broken jaws, Popped eyeballs (yes, blinded for life), fractured skulls, and a few broken spines at the hands of sadistic cops. They are out there. Denying that is intellectual dishonesty.

I saw this, too, in the short time I worked at a hospital ER. The ones who came in with the EMTS were OK, the ones the cops delivered were in really bad shape. I've seen more people need the ICU because of cops than because of drunk drivers. Cops are more of a threat to society than drunk drivers, and less easily controlled.

There must be a contest. This is now the stupidest, and easily the most contemptible, post I've seen on FR. Congratulations, I'm sure your homeboys will be proud of you.

I usually support LEO's 100% but this story is a little light on details. Why was an elite unit serving a warrant on a college student?

Strickland was the only son of Raleigh lawyer Don Strickland, who said in a statement released Sunday that the son "had tremendous potential and was just coming into his own."

The police will regret this. I can see no reason for the LEO's to do what they did. Admittedly I wasn't there but they killed the kid and his dog. I can see this kind of response if this was a violent bank robber but a college kid?

That's painting with a pretty broad brush. Almost every LEO I've encountered has been 100% professional. I can think of only one time almost 27 years ago where the CHP guy was way out of line but that's it and it was because I had a tire iron in the fron seat (I'd just had a flat).

What has botched police raids have to do with the claim of police officers who "relish the opportunity to commit murder in the name of the law"?
Do you also agree with Murtha about the "cold blooded murder" committed by our troops?

it's only a matter of time before someone sues Sony for causing all these deaths because they created an artificial shortage of these addictive games.

Well certainly I want dangerous individuals prosecuted and incarcerated. But this whole thing would have probably resolved itself by the DA dropping the Class G Felony in lieu of a guilty plea on the misdeamenor assault charge, he would have been given 200 hours of community service and put on probation for 2 years. Instead he got a death sentence. I think it's overkill, no pun intended. I did a little reading on NC statutes, and unlike some here who jumped to the conclusion that assault with a deadly weapon means that a firearm was used, they could have had a hammer or a stick. It's open to interpretation.

Point is they could have just arrested him when he went down to the local 7-eleven to get a slurpy.
