The deputies were helping police for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington serve an arrest warrant that charged Strickland with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and breaking and entering a vehicle.

The Police should have made sure to knock politely. -sarc

Why do they always have to kill the dog???

Because hoodlums train their dogs to attack people.

Also, it said he had a controller in his hand when he went to the door, but they said he didn't answer his door. If he wasn't going to answer the door, why would he go to it when they kicked it in.

I noticed that also. The cop said it wouldn't have happened if the 'kid would have answered the door'. Well his roomie was there too it seems (else how would he know about the controller?). So did the cops knock or not?

It's more than likely that this was the first step in the process on this particular charge. A cop probably had probable cause based on his investigation to have an arrest warrant issued. Which would have then lead to an arraignment, and bail. Future court dates would have then been scheduled at the arraignment most likely after 35 days.

He was already in the middle of an assault charge, so he had to have had an attorney. They probably could have arrested him at his next court appearance for that charge, but that would preclude busting down a door. I think these guys own stock in door and lock companies.

OldEagle has said for years that when police departments started wearing fatigues and combat boots law enforcement totally lost it.

When bad guys started shooting at police with fully automatic weapons, the police reacted. It would be interesting to explore other ways to have the same response capability.

jjm2111, I don't see how we can evaluate this with the information given. I can see that PD's ought to make publicly available what criteria they have for deploying "elite" forces and the rest of it. It does seem that they were invited to the party by the University Police, so somebody thought it was going to get nasty.

Police forces attract sadists. Its a sad fact of life. These types relish the opportunity to commit murder in the name of the law.

*************

Good grief. I've met a lot of cops, and they were all professional, courteous and helpful.

Whooaa there, I read the story and nowhere does it say a gun was used in the commission of this crime. A deadly weapon could be a baseball bat. It's all up to the cop filling out the affidavit. Don't jump to conclusions.

"Ryan David Mills, a 20-year-old UNC-Wilmington student who lived at a different address, also was arrested on the same charges and released Saturday on bond."

Notice the other kid arrested for this charge was taken into custody without incidence and was released on bond. If a gun was used the other kid would not be out on bond.

"These types relish the opportunity to commit murder in the name of the law."

I've known an awful lot of police officers, some are jerks and some are wonderful people. I have never met, nor even heard about, a police officer who "relishes the opportunity to commit murder in the name of the law".
The statement has no "truth" and has no defense.
Is it possible that your views are distorted from personal experience with the law?

" SWAT is used way to much for too many of the wrong reasons."

I would agree with this.

What color was Peyton Strickland? Hopefully he was white so the media won't be able to stir things up with the racism angle.

Police forces attract sadists. Its a sad fact of life.

Maybe you could get a little more precise with this? You have some sources, some estimates of the ratio of psychopathic sadistic murderers to less, ah, troubled police officers? Maybe the number of incidents where it was shown that sadism led to police murders? Maybe you could compare the proportion of sadists in the police force to that in hospital staffs?

Or is this just one of those "everyone knows" things?

You cop haters would be harder to pick out if you also posted stories about cops getting killed in the line of duty -- followed by assertions of the proportion of speeding drivers who have personality or sexual disorders. As it is, your contentions seem to be more about your anger than any other reality.

Can we talk about wht happened in North Carolina now?

"But OBSERVE first. Too often the late night dynamic entry is the first choice of action when it should be toward the end."

Exactly. Take him down as he leaves for class or the grocery store or do something of the sort.

I don't know about sadists, but they do attract social misfits. (or so I'm told, by an x-prosecutor friend of mine)

Stealing a PS3 is worthy of a death sentence without trial?

The arrest warrant said armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, if I was a LEO I would be prudent to assume the subject was armed.

I would probably enlist the services of SWAT as well.

"It's extremely unlikely that this was the first attempt to get this guy to appear for legal proceedings."

The article said he had a court date for something else in January. Since it isn't January yet, how do you know he wouldn't have shown up?

Also they were serving an arrest warrant, so yes, it is not only likely that this was the first attempt to get this guy to appear for this particular crime, it is certain that this was the first attempt.

Assuming he was armed and dangerous doesn't mean he should be shot right away......
