Florida's national title chances rely on voters

ATLANTA -- Michigan had its chance against Ohio State and lost. Southern California couldn't even beat its struggling rival on Saturday, so the Trojans won't get an opportunity to play the No. 1 Buckeyes more than a month from now.

Florida is next in line, and after beating Arkansas 38-28 in Saturday night's SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome, the Gators deserve the opportunity to play Ohio State in the Jan. 8 BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz.

Florida finished 12-1 against one of the country's toughest schedules, won its first SEC title since 2000 and lost one game in a conference that is still regarded the sport's toughest from top to bottom.

"We certainly do," Florida coach Urban Meyer said when asked Saturday night whether he believes the Gators should get a chance to play Ohio State. "Florida belongs. The other team had a shot. We went 12-1, and I think the country wants to see the Southeastern Conference champion against the Big 10 champion. I think that's what this is all about."

But because of college football's inept system of determining which two teams will play for the national championship, voters around the country will decide Sunday whether the Gators or Wolverines will play the Buckeyes in the Arizona desert.

My golly, I love SEC fans. It was the refs! Their fault. And it's the other teams in the SEC ... they're just so darn good that NO team could run that gauntlet. So it's their fault. And our Gators were so banged-up and battered and yet still prevailed in all but one outing. Se we can blame injuries, too. And it's the fawning media that loves the Big 10 and has it in for the SEC. And it's the idiotic BCS formulas that we had no problem with until just now. So unfair!!!!!

And here is my favorite ...

"Meyer recognizes the BSC fraud for what it is ..."

I presume that you were on Al Gore's side in 2000 when he recognized the electoral college for what it is, right?

The pre-established rules should not dictate outcomes, right? No justice, no peace baby. We'll whine and moan and cry and p*ss around and generally deny the legitimacy of the outcome because we did not get our way.

Have a good day. I'm out ...

Wait ... one more thing.

If you can entertain the possibility that the two best teams in the country might play in the same conference, then either the national championship team accommodates precisely the rematch that might occur ... or it's not really a national championship team.

Even hypothetically, if #1 plays #3, with #2 shut out because we can't have two teams from the same conference, then it's not really a championship game, is it?

WHAT OTHER CONFERENCE HAD THREE TEAMS IN THE TOP TEN YESTERDAY?

Big Ten?

AND THE GATORS BEAT BOTH OF THEM.

Wow, how did I miss it? Was that Ohio State and Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin, or Michigan and Wisconsin?

...It's the way the rankings are set up; it's the way the rules work. Explicitly. No ambiguity. It's what was agreed to prior to the season.

All true, and illustrates everything that is wrong with college football. The BCS should never have been implemented. It was a marketing ploy for television which fed off the juvenile obsession with a coronated "Number One." College ball was better off without an "official" title game.

The old bowl system was far better, with selected matchups and even some of the predetermined bowls like the old Rose Bowl. If two undefeated teams didn't happen to meet, and the coaches' poll picked one and the writers' poll picked the other, then the fans had a great subject to debate and argue about for the next year.

The current situation is a perfect case in point. Under the old system Ohio State would be playing Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl, and Florida would be playing possibly Michigan, or even Louisville in the Cotton or Sugar bowl. Say both OSU and Florida won their bowls. Both schools and fans could have a high old time claiming to be the best, and no one would know for sure, and that would be fine because it doesn't matter anyway.

If Michigan is the second best team, there is little choice but to send them rather than Florida

I believe Michigan is the better team, but I can't prove it, the only thing we KNOW is that the gators have done enough to get themselves into the national championship game, having said that, I think Michigan deserves a shot too! As a hater, I hope Michigan makes it in instead!

Now, now. If you don't agree that Auburn dominated FL in the 2nd half, we must have watched different games. I am for SEC loyalty and all that but don't try to rewrite history. Please.

Michigan is the better team.Michigan had to go into Ohio state 1 day after the DEATH of a beloved coach, and lost by only 3 points to the number 1 team in the country. The Gators lose to number 11 Alburn and not only that Michigan is rated number three in the country. When usc lost yesterday they claimed the Rose Bowl which Lsu was already invited to. May I ask you one question if you kick out number two from a rematch , where do you put the number two team in the country? kick out Lsu , oh that is really rich. Michigan I am sure would be glad to play the chicken gators who played an easier conference this year in a playoff. But unless I am wrong and do not know anything you do not kick out the number three rated team to go to number four, because the gators want to play. So does Michigan and they are the better team by far.Michigan would eat the gators for lunch and spit them out for supper. If the gators get in this is fixed to the hilt and besides that I will laugh all day after Ohio state goes Gator hunting. They will be picking up the gator skins from here to Fl.Michigan is the only team that on a neutral field can beat the buckeye's , face it!

The Gators will never beat the Buckeyes, don't dream. The buckeyes would have gator skins for purses all over the country. The only team to beat the Buckeyes and tressel is Michigan.

I am far from being a fan of the Gators and am proud that my team beat them this year.

But your explanation here takes the cake when it comes to ridiculous comments re: Michigan's qualifications to play in the NC: "Michigan is the better team.Michigan had to go into Ohio state 1 day after the DEATH of a beloved coach..."

LOL...this explanation is probably the most pathetic one that I have read so far. ROFL.

BTW, did you know that Florida beat Arkansas approximately 1 month after Katherine Harris lost in Florida? They had to overcome tragedy too. /sarc (Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is named after Harris' grandfather.)

Not this time. The only reason you won was because we had a bad day the day before. You will learn some day about death and how it effects you , I hope your coach lives a long time and you never have to deal with the class Michigan team did the day before and after the game.God Bless Michigan, for setting a great example to the world on what class and good football are!

Michigan had the 3rd hardest rated schedule in the country.

If you go that direction with your argument, you lose hands down to Florida. Florida has played a tougher schedule, is 5-1 (maybe 4-1) against top 25 teams (Michigan is 1-1 or 2-1), and won conference championship in the toughest league in the country.

No way Michigan should get a second shot. They had their title game. They lost.

Wrong everybody would love a rematch just go to the fan roster and read the posts. Ohio state is the one who cannot take the rematch. Call them chicken Buckeyes!

For a rematch, Michigan would have to be clearly above any other team. Had UF lost yesterday, that would have been the case, and Michigan of course would have deserved to replay OSU.

But the logic should be, if it is close between two teams, the team that has not had a shot against OSU should play. That's why UF deserves it.
