I'm laughing because I DO Windows support, Jorge.

I don't know what you are smoking, but viruses are just ONE of the major support issues.

Yep. We discussed this before, haven't we? I use win2k pro and server versions and it's as solid as a rock. I've got multiple servers with various businesses and they don't crash unless it's a hardware failure. Now the only thing I miss is the 64 bit aspect.

I totally agree. Since 97 I've been using a Pentium II 300 MHz with 192 Megs of RAM on a Windows 2000 machine and it outperforms by far my recent mini-upgrade to a Pentium IV 1.29 GHz with 256 Megs of RAM.

And IE7 is a joke. I now do my browsing in Firefox.

Yep. I prefer Win2K over XP as well. By a wide margin.

If it's everything it promises to be

When have you ever known this to be true?

At least XP claimed increased stability over Win98.

Keyword: 'claimed'

Old joke: "Windows 95 was the beta release for Windows 98."

I have found Win98 to be mostly bulletproof, however that was only after a lot of tuning, tweaking, etc.

An interesting website for anyone wanting to enhance and keep on cranking with Win98 is:

http://www.mdgx.com

The website is a little challenging to navigate but it contains a lot of useful information on upgrading Win98 using the more useful (and stable) features of Windows ME.

As for Vista?

I'll wait for the summer at the earliest before considering an upgrade.

"I'm still starting to have serious problems with it, including sudden reboots and inordinately long boot times"

When was the last time you ran a spy sweeper or two? Long boot time usually mean MANY things trying to start when windows starts.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx and get Process Explorer and Autoruns. They are free and under the Processes and Threads section.

Process Explorer will enable to see everything that is running when your computer is running. Autoruns will enable you to see what is running when your system is.

Both are free and the outfit Sysinternals.com is so good MS bought them a few months ago. In Process Explorer under OPTIONS menu the third thing down says "Replace Task Manager". Select that and also "Show Lower Pane".

Then whenever you do a CTRL/ALT/Del it will bring up that instead of Task Manager. Stuff in the upper pane is mostly required items and will say what it is for and who made it.

The other stuff should also say who made it. In the lower pane is mostly the currently running programs with who made them.

If at any time you have a question on an item listed Right Click on it and select "GOOGLE". That will do a search on google for the item you right clicked on.

If it is not a Microsoft item or in not something you need or made running then Right Click again and try "KILL PROCESS TREE". That will shut it down. If your system still runs good... you probably did not need it running.

Now open your AUTORUNS program you downloaded. Go in there and uncheck that item. Now it should not autorun again. Word of caution. BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS GO INTO WINDOWS AND CREATE A RESTORE POINT. That way you can go back to where you were before you did anything. If you don't know how use windows help.

Create a new restore point every time before you stop something in AutoRuns.

Also get CCleaner which you can get on CNET or ZDNET and it is also free. I run it every time before I shut down the system. That way it cleans out most of the junk, including some spyware you may have gotten while surfing the Internet.

Good Luck. Your system may run faster.

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

I ran the "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor" a couple weeks ago and my computer will not handle VISTA unless I up-grade some hardware.

I do have XP installed.

Bingo. That's why I have zero interest in Vista. I'm in no mood to let the music and movie industries make it even harder for me to listen to the music I've paid for already.

As for apple. The iPod is about the only product that apple sells at a profit.

Obviously you have not read Apple's quarterly reports...

>>>>>>"Everything down-the-road will be download/subsciption oriented and updated by degrees"<<<<<<<

You are Absolutely 100% Correct!

Vista is designed to be just that way, just the next step of more machine/driver control than they already have now.

Biggest problem that they will have is the same one that AOL had... we won't buy it, it is easy but not worth giving up the freedom of choice. We have so many options that we didn't have in the past and most are just as easy, many are FREE.
My prediction is this will be a stinker for MS.

Somebody 'splain to me what's "innovative" here.

I just read that Vista will be able to handle the NUMA-style architecture coming out with the quad-core AMD hardware.

They can have the eye candy but this technology will be interesting to follow on the desktop.
