I really doubt anybody actually ridiculed him for suggesting that the way the wood was treated might have had a big effect on the sound the instruments made. It's not exactly a whack-job theory.

Texas A&M. They are big on agricultural stuff - figures they'd find somebody interested in wooden instruments and how they were made.

That's what researchers do, tho. 'Dig' into mysteries, on your buck. That being said, as a violinist, I find this fascinating.

And certainly worthwhile research -- trumps much of the research that is funded today, ie Global Warming, Genetic Causes of Homosexuality, How to Make America Marxist So the Stupid-People Won't Know, etc. All of which, you can bet, is being researched and funded. Probably by the taxpayers (ie, the Stupid-People).
