Country Singer Pleads Guilty In Trophy Bear Case (MN)

Country singer Troy Lee Gentry pleaded guilty this morning in U.S. District Court in Duluth to a misdemeanor charge of falsely registering a trophy bear he killed as wild, when in fact it was a captive bear named "Cubby," which he shot near Sandstone, Minn., in 2004.

As part of a plea agreement that avoided a trial that was to start today, Gentry, 39, agreed to pay a $15,000 fine, forfeit the bear's hide and the bow he used to shoot the animal and give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years.

At the same hearing, Gentry's local hunting guide, Lee Marvin Greenly, owner of the Minnesota Wildlife Connection near Sandstone, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of aiding other hunters to kill bears at baiting stations he maintained illegally inside the Sandstone National Wildlife Refuge.

No its not hunting. He killed a captive bear, I hope he feels like a real big man. He should never be allowed to hunt again . And they should make him pooperscoop after bears in a zoo. I hate it when people hunt like this. Its not done for the sport, he just wanted to be able to say I killed a bear. This is the lazy way to do it. If you really wanted to hunt you would go in the woods and find your own bear, not a captive one.

It's really bizarre behavior for a high profile "tough guy" like him.

I don't even hunt on my in-laws game ranch, because it just don't feel like hunting when you're in a blind above a planted meadow next to a pond with all kinds of corn scattered around.

I like to hunt.

Now I have a good excuse Not to buy his cd's. My husband loves them and now I don't. He should have gotten a bigger fine and I still say he should be made to pooperscoop after bears. I have no problem with hunting but I do have a problem with frauds and liars. I wouldn't shoot a captive bear or deer. Both these guys ought to be ashamed of themselves. Hmmm maybe I can get away with breaking those cd's. I had to hear MG all summer and I started to get really tired of them.

Gentry's publicist released the following statement after the plea was announced.

I love animals. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for animals, and especially bears. It was a shame what happened to Cubby.

I would like to emphasize that this was an unnusual incident, in that Cubby just refused to dance and I, being a performer, found this to be unnacceptable.

Cubby knew the rules for dancing bears and what the consequences for failing to dance would be. He made his choice. I did my duty to the profession of entertainment. And we both are suffering the consequences.

This from someone whose screen name is all caps? I would have capitalized each "how" but someone used up all the caps. I was just balancing the karma of the Universe. Sheesh.

The only hunting I've done has been with a camera, not a rifle or a shotgun. In fact, the idea of killing an animal for sport makes me sick. Hunters speak of the 'hunt' as if it were a real challenge. If a challenge is what they want, let them hunt other hunters, also equipped with guns and binoculars, but please stop pretending that tracking and killing a dumb beast is in any way a manly act. It is not. To anyone who knows the wild, it is little more than shooting fish in a barrel. Maybe if we lived in a time and place where Shop-Rite and Stop N Shop and Acme and A&P didn't offer specials on meat and foul and fish just about every week, hunting might reclaim some relevance.

The people change one kinda freaked me out, I guess I can't relate. I don't know anyone struggling with hate and the Klan. Not to minimize it though.
