Alabama fired coach Mike Shula less than a year after the Crimson Tide finished a 10-2 season, according to a newspaper report.
Shula told his assistant coaches late Sunday night that Alabama athletic director Mal Moore had dismissed him, The Tuscaloosa News reported on its Web site. An official announcement is expected Monday.
Reached at home, Moore declined comment Monday morning but said he would hold a news conference later in the day.
The Crimson Tide went 6-6 this season, finishing the season with three straight losses.
Shula, a former Alabama quarterback, was winless in four tries against Auburn, his team's biggest rival. The Tigers beat the Crimson Tide 22-15 on Nov. 18, leaving Shula to answer questions about his job security.

I have a friend on the coaching staff at WVU I talked to him this morning. He said that RR told his staff that he had been contacted by UAT but that he told them that he was NOT interested. Apparently they told him that they wanted him to come in and begin a "joint" effort to find assistant coaches. Typical bammer arrogance, they wanted the head coach to let them pick his assistants. He also confirmed that since he told them no, UAT came back and offered more money and said that they only wanted "certain" coaches held over. Sounds to me like they are trying to keep Kines.Once again, this is just what I have heard. It is from a member of RR's staff that I have known for quite some time, so take it FWIW.

As an Auburn fan I'd take that right now.
And people in Hell want ice water. Miami is not the draw anymore. Their facilities are terrible, that FIU brawl set the program back years, their fan support sucks, they play in a basketball conference against teams like Duke, and get relatively little national exposure compared to the old days. Their main rival, FSU is also on a downward spiral as well, and that is the one national game of interest Miami has. Like I said, Shula might end up looking real good to them when it's all said and done.
The problem with Bama was their horrible offensive line and their Coach was in over his head.

He might have been born and raised in NE Tennessee, but he wants to stay in the state of South Carolina.
The problem with Bama is that their Athletic Department sucks and they are on their 5th coach in 6 years....
The situation is absolutely different at Alabama then it was at Notre Ame.
First off, the seniors this year are the first class during the probation Alabama was put on. They weren't exactly the pick of the litter during recruiting.
College Coaches need at least 4 years to get their guys in place, to get their system running and to get the coaches needed to get the job done.
That won't be allowed to happen at Alabama and this cycle will repeat itself in a few years.
BTW rumors I'm hearing are that Rich Rodriguez has indeed shot Alabama down because they wouldn't allow him to select his own assistants.

Their unrealistic expectations are what causes this. There is a huge difference between "not accepting medicroty" and outright delusion.
BTW, I'd be shocked if Spurrier decided to go there because he mentioned the rampant cheating at Alabama as one of the reason why he wanted to leave Florida and go to the NFL. Has the culture changed or has he?

Pat Forde is just like most of the Northen Liberal a-hole sports writers who hate all things Bama.
It is not completely different than ND. Alabama is a traditional power like ND and will always have high expectations. 6-6 will never do at either place, except for the first or second year in a rebuilding process. This was Shula's fourth year.
I guarantee you that if Ohio State lost to Michigan 5 years in a row the Buckeyes here in Ohio would not stand for that either. Bama, ND, nor Ohio State will never except constant mid-power status as there is too much money involved.
I though the A-holes in the media were too tough on ND when they fired Ty W. The same goes for Bama this time.

That's complete internet message board crap, probably spread by an Auburn fan. Alabama has always let the coach hire the assistants.
Finebaum said that he has spoken to Spurrier, and that Steve has told him what is going on. He had to make sure and throw in that he and Steve are golf buddies. He said that Steve told him what's up on the basis that he not announce it on air. He said that while he knows the news he is keeping his promise and the Bama Nation will have to wait a couple days before any announcement is made.
So, paul might just be stirring the old ratings pot, but who knows.
