I live near Fort Hood, Texas and whenever there is a deployment a lot of quality pets are dumped. We have probably had twenty or twenty five different breeds that chose our place to call home over the past twenty five years.

As long as they behave themselves and get along with the other dogs they have food and medical care furnished. I have had to get rid of only five over that time.

We are down to six dogs ranging from a toy poodle to a Doberman mix. Yes, all were strays or castoffs. The poodle was down to a pound and a half and you could feel every bone in the dog's body. He still outran my 15 year old grandson when we tried to catch him. He and one of our other small dogs now have 37 states to their credit and are motel and elevator trained.

I had a Pit Bull mix for a short time and was extremely concerned about the animal. He disappeared about the time I was going to make a decision about keeping him. I expect some of my red neck neighbors picked him up.

I do not trust the breed/type: too many stories and too much smoke to not have a fire.

BTW I have had five Doberman and all of them have been pussy cats but people will not get out of their vehicles when they are greeted by the gaping mouth. (I live in the country and have to furnish my own protection. Yes, I have big iron close at hand if the big mouth doesn't work.)

I also watch my dogs reactions to people to make my initial impression of them. They have pretty well defined the character of the people. I am extremely suspicious of people that do not like dogs.

I was very interested in your post as I read it all. It pretty much checks with my experience, but I really did meet a mild-mannered Pit Bull once. Maybe I should quit while I'm ahead, eh? (No, I'm not Canadian) (eh?)
