Not only is Kanawa correct about that list being from the AKC, which doesn't acknowledge the pit bull as a breed, but if Los Angeles animal shelter kills 6,000 pit bulls alone each year, there must be a pretty large number of them. They do adopt them out also.

Look at numbers from the UKC and ADBA combined with shelter statistics and you will see they far outnumber most breeds. Currently they represent about 10% of the entire population of dogs, big and small. That is a pretty large chunk considering the AKC alone registers 150 different breeds and that number jumps to twice that many when counting the UKC.

I just received this...
Pit bull birth control free for owners Friday

Spaying or neutering of pit bulls will be free Friday at a clinic sponsored by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. The ongoing "Payday for Pit Bulls" program has assisted owners of 231 pit bulls in obtaining the birth control for their dogs.

Take your pit bull to the City Council office at 4300 S. Park Ave. before 7 a.m. for registration. The dogs will be transported free to the Humane Society clinic, 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd., for the procedure. Pets will be returned to the council office between 4 and 4:30 p.m. that day. Pets should not be fed after 8 the previous evening. Water is all right anytime.

The program includes free vaccinations, identification microchips, dog food and toys and $20 cash for participating pet owners. Call 321-3701 or visit www.hssaz.org for more information. link

My first reaction to this is positive.
Particularly in light of this info...
Sex of dog -
Though not possible to determine the sex of all the dogs involved in fatalities from 1965, a survey of the sex of the dogs involved in the last 6 years (Jan. 2000 thru Dec. 2005) reveal that overwhelmingly the dogs involved in fatal attacks are males. In the fatal attacks during this six year period, over 91% of these cases a male dog was involved, (i.e. either a single male dog or a male dog accompanied by other males and/or female dogs).

Reproductive status of dog (intact vs. altered)-
As with the sex of the dog, it was not possible to determine the reproductive status of all the dogs involved in fatal attacks dating back to 1965, but an examination of the dogs involved in fatal attacks from Jan. 2000 thru Dec. 2005, reveal that the overwhelming majority of dogs involved were unaltered.Of the fatalities during this 6 year period, 92% of the dogs involved were unaltered (not spayed or neutered). link

I'm reasonably sure these stats also reflect those involving non-fatal attacks.
