1)North Carolina isn't the Deep South or Virginia/Maryland.
2)By "dominating," I didn't mean being the most numerous population segment. The planters were a minority, but they dominated the Deep South and Tidewater politically and economically. I am well aware that the majority of Southerners, then as now, were low-church Protestants.
