Hopefully your degree in History was not granted based upon any understanding of American history. If so it is fraudulent.
James Madison was a Nationalist who believed, as I do, in States' Rights. He, like I, knew that this does not allow the States to violate the Constitution. THAT was never one of the "rights" states have. He, like I, knew that the Union was inviolable and not capable of being cast aside, of abrogated by any state.
Our constitution defined the Union as those states adopting the Constitution and those admitted later by Congress. THAT is outside the power of ANY state or group of states to change. It can ONLY be changed by the processes within the Constitution not by ersatz conventions not called by Congress.
