In fact the Civil War did not end slavery in any of the Union states or Union-occupied states--the 14th amendment did.

Correction: The 13th Amendment ended slavery. The 14th Amendment attempted to force the readmitted Southern states to treat its freedmen as full citizens, but unfortunately wound up being the reason the US Supreme Court thinks it has jurisdiction over prayers at high school football games.
