you really SHOULD go do some research. Camp Sumter was one off the LAST CSA POW camps. at it's worst, "Andersonville" was a "Sunday School picnic", when compared to Camp Douglas, Elmira or Point Lookout.

at those DAMNyankee hellholes. the GOAL of those "northern confinement facilities" was to TORTURE, ASSAULT,DEGRADE, MAIM & KILL.

NO other possible explanation for the treatment of that many THOUSAND prisoners is believable.

I believe most of us here learned in grade school about Sherman's "march to the sea" in which his army plundered, murdered, and raped civilians who were a direct target of his campaign (there was virtually zero Confederate resistance and Sherman's appetite for destruction grew the farther he went south). Sherman adopted a practice of "collective responsibility" to "justify" targeting civilians by making them pay for Confederate harassment of Union forces. He burned Randolph, TN out of existence and destroyed many Southern towns and cities inhabited by women, children, slaves, and the elderly. This is Sherman after the destruction of Meridian, MS:

"for five days, ten thousand of our men worked hard and with a will, in that work of destruction, with axes, sledges, crowbars, clawbars, and with fire.... Meridian no longer exists."

I thought most knew this stuff. When I debate the Civil War it's usually on Lincoln's real agenda, not on Sherman's appetite for destroying civilians and their sustenance. I think this line by Sherman puts his attitude in sharp relief:

"to the petulant and persistent secessionists, why, death is mercy."

One of his proteges, Phillip Sheridan, originated the saying "The only good Indian is a dead Indian."

every time it rains hard down there, the Chief Ranger tells me they find more bones/skulls. there is a whole storage room full, packed in crates to the ceiling.

one day when i was there for a ceremony, an interviewer from the Washington Post asked the speaker, "Why do you tell lies about the lincoln administration". the speaker (an Episcopal priest) said, "Come & see" and took the young man to the storage facility. the "interview" ENDED "suddenly", when the interviewer went away in tears.

one of our members wife is a survivor of Dachau. she described Point Lookout as "the same sort of place as that, which i was in".

had the 1864 election been FAIR/honest, lincoln would have been back in IL, being a "crooked railroad lawyer".

The guy was crooked all the way. Lincoln was one of these say-anything to get power individuals. A Hitler, a Stalin, a Clinton. He could care less about slavery. I think he represented one slave in all his years as a lawyer (I believe he lost the case, but I could be wrong). I do know the leader of the abolitionist movement and Republican Party hated him and called him "an abomination" or some such. Lincoln used slavery as a political straw man to collect his tariff. It's similar in fashion to Democrats using stem cell research to justify their true agenda, abortion.

Lincoln's famous remark that if he could preserve the Union without freeing one slave he would summed up his attitude. As regards his true attitude to slavery, he was a colonist. He wanted every single one of them put on boats and relocated back to Africa. He most certainly regarded blacks as irredeemably inferior to whites.
