E-Bay is for suckers.

You have to make private arrangements and get your money upfront with a contract. If you want a PS3 under your Christmas tree this year, you needed to be thinking about it months ago.

Dislocated jaw......ouch. Between this video and A Christmas Story, we're 0-2 in Man vs. Flagpole.

A playstation 3 just sold on Ebay for $6,100.

If I was in college, would it be worth it to sit 36 or even 48 hours in a store to make over $5000 selling a PS3? You bet.

We'll probably get one, but will wait for about 6 mos. or so for the all this stupidity to die down. Hopefully the price will come down a bit as well.

Sony is at a severe shortage for their PS3. Apparently there will be less than 200,000 units in the US for the release, and they'll be lucky to get more than a million by the end of the year. After that, the US will be competing for units targeted for Sony's European release. You may be able to get one in six months without waiting if you're lucky.

As far as price, it's staying up there for at least a few years.

Personally, I'll be picking up a Wii this Saturday night. I'll be in line for a bit, but the pressure's not so great since Nintendo has at least 1.8 million units available for the release date.

"What keeps us in PS's camp is the fact that all of our 1st and 2nd generation games can continue to be played on each consecutive system."

Not anymore. I guess you didn't hear that Sony decided to no longer support all of the older games in order to get the PS3 out in time for Christmas.

it's not like they won't get one in a few weeks

Yes it is.

There are only 400K in the whole country. Works out to 20-25 units per store, with lines averaging 50-80 people. Those at the head of these lines were almost always paid to be there. It has become a mini-industry.

Don't need or want one - but the chance to score with big $$ was certainly intriguing.

being omnipresent, god could watch them in a WalMart just as well, and even better- because that's where the most of them are. The concentration is higher there. Besides, while queuing in WalMart [or another retailer like Best Buy], they are at least temporarily distracted from committing other transgressions.

"I'll wait until next spring when I can walk into Walmart and pick one up without injury after the ridiculous hype has worn off."

By that time the bugs in the system will also be known and fixed.

eBay hits price points the market will bear. If people want PS3s but don't have the time or inclination to stand in the lines, then they have to pay somebody for their time and effort. If they don't want to pay the premium, then they can wait til the second or third shipments (after Christmas) for the units. Period.

Yep.

Its good economics.

Line sitter: $250+Food
PS3" $600+tax

European buyers (all Americans in Europe) paying $2500-$3000.

You do the math.

You buy one for $600 and they are selling on eBay for $2000. That's pretty good work if you can get it.

Maybe some sales genius can explain this to me.

According to other articles on the subject, PS3 will have 400,000 units for sale in the U.S. prior to Christmas, at $600 a pop. People are waiting in lines for hours to buy them, in order to resell them for $2000. PS3 will not see any of the $1600 markup. (That's not even looking at the individual games, which will probably run upwards of 60-70 dollars).

So why, exactly, is it in their interest to only sell 400,000 of these units? Wouldn't it make more sense to crank out 2 million units instead? Given that they're probably made in China for $12 anyway, why not go with a more robust production capability? What benefit is derived from hype when the customer can't buy your product?

I understand that .. and I understand they will be sold on ebay for thousands in profit

But IMO .. you have to be nuts to pay that much money for a game that will be available in January .. just so you can say you got it first

What makes me sad is the number of people here in Atlanta that looked like gangsta thugs and I wonder how many of their families are on some sort of government assistance.
Yes, I am stereotyping.
