That's not a horror story, but "and they all lived happily ever after". Here would be something better [all true, happened to me]: in thucking USSR they did the root canals without a painkiller - first they would drill close to the pulp [in a sensitized tooth], cement some arsenic in, then the next day remove the arsenic and start removing the root canal pulp [supposedly killed, but in reality never completely] with a long hand drill. All without painkiller. Well, once they broke that long thin root canal drill in my tooth and then cemented it in. A decade later, in the US, it finally produced acute pain - and the dentist was so amazed that he stammered "'who...has be-en t-t-torturing you?" and then proceeded to extract seven teeth [all with the painkiller].

By the time I read "first they would drill close to the pulp" and I was thinking "why didn't you just tell them what they wanted to know!!!"
