The point is that the story in the song was not the only time that the "lights went out in Georgia" for innocent men.

Except that the song says "That's THE night the lights went out in Georgia," not "That's ONE OF the nights..." Also, the chorus makes clear that it's a "Backwoods southern lawyer" who is the one to blame, not Sherman or even yankees in general. But, if your position is that any story about anything bad ever happening in the south at any time is actually a metaphor for Sherman's march, then I guess I'll just leave you to continue stewing in your 140 year old juices.

Do you want to take a whack at "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by explaining how Sherman challenged someone to a fiddling match?

I believe this is the one they're talking about.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down>

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember oh so well

The night they drove Old Dixie down and the bells were ringing
The night they drove Old Dixie down and the people were singin', they went
La-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Back with my wife in Tennessee, when one day she called to me
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes Robert E. Lee!"
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest
But they should never have taken the very best

The night they drove old Dixie down and the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down and all the people were singin', they went
Na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na-na

Like my father before me, I will work the land
And like my brother before me, who took a rebel stand
He was just eighteen, proud and brave
But a Yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the mud below my feet
You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat

The night they drove old Dixie oown and the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down and all the people were singin', they went
Na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na-na

The night they drove old Dixie down and all the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down and the people were singin', they went
Na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na na-na-na, na-na-na-na

Now back off before I have to open up a can of Rebel Whup Ass on you.
