Do you have English steak houses? I recall growing up here in Cleveland my parents took us to an English Pub steakhouse. I recall it being expensive & everything was good. I don't know if it is even open any longer ..should ask mom where it is/was.
The decor was English Cottage in & outside.
When you said you had a fillet steak, is that the same as our fillet Mignon? When I ate meat, that is the steak I ate.
Here there are a lot of "steak houses" now that are operational. I understand Ruth Criss is one of the better ones from a chain/franchise perspective.
Well I do hope your day was fun & glad you had an outing with Phil. He seems like a good guy.
Hope you are happy with the coffee maker also.
I saw the movie The Queen for the second time. Have you seen it?

Yes we do have Steak Houses and Steak Restaurants but on the whole I find them not that brilliant our most well know chain is Angus Steak House
Regarding cut of steak I think that is what you call tenderloin in Britain Fillet Steak is considered to be the best cut to have if you go out for a steak.

I did not go to a restaurant or steak house we went down to a seaside town called Hythe which is about 25 minutes drive from Ashford to collect the coffee maker that dad bought me off ebay and then we walked around the town until we saw something that took our fancy.
We came across a very old pub called the Globe which was advertising Steak night so we went in and had a steak meal you could have a sauce on the steak if you wanted but neither Phil or I did. So the meal was just steak, some salad bits (lettuce, tomato, cucumber) boiled peas, fried mushrooms and onion rings with chunky crispy chips.
Here is the pub we went to

Oh that sounds like a nice outing Eleanor. I have always found it fun to explore new locations (even nearby) as a tourist & experiment with food places also.
How nice that so many have web pages & I felt I could capture the atmosphere you experienced yesterday.
do you have franchises there other than maybe the fast foods? They seem to be taking over so much of the market share here. I still prefer the mom & pop places...with a few exceptions.. There is are two or three here I like..Macaroni Grill(Italian); Chili's (tex mex) and Olive Garden (Italian). There is a rather new one here called Chipoltes.. it is a fast food Mexican owned by McDonalds.. clean, decent food & it serves beer & margaritas. It is relatively fast but is the fast food lines for food
I was thinking about you with your first birthday w/o mom. I know I have always considered birthdays mom/kid situations. I try to when possible do something special w/for my mom on my birthday.

I just found out from mom that the English Pub/Tudor place I was recalling a a little girl is no longer standing. It was about 2 miles from our home here. I recall the tudor facade, big dark, woody rooms with large open hearth fireplaces & very good food. I recall my dad having been in mugs, which I had never seen before at that time(at home dad used a bottle!)..
Mom told me an interesting story. On one of the outings there (I may have been 7 or 8) after driving around a bit they located the place whre they bought land & built the home we are in
In the early 70's it was absorbed as part of the Naitonal park here & was torn down much later. I am guessing it was quite old & to rehab & be useful for the park would have been very expensive.. so like a lot of things here they just tear things down.
I essentially left the area when starting college in 60s & so lost tract of it....and just was triggered as a memory when you told about the steak dinner out. It is interesting all the things in the recesses of our mind that take a little "tickle" to come out.
NOW, need to do garbage!

Most of our Franchise places seem to be the fast food outlets such as KFC, Macdonalds, Pizza Hut etc but recently an Italian type food chain which also has a cocktail bar have sprung up certainly in the South East not sure if countrywide. We have one in Ashford and they are called Frankie and Bennies do you have them? To me it seems to be very much styled on an American type restaurant/bar.
On a completely different note we also have in Ashford an American dinner car in shiny aluminium and they serve American breakfast and fast food type fare.

I suppose because recent years birthdays I have spent with Phil until you mentioned it I had not on a conscious level thought about it being the first birthday without mum. I think Christmas maybe I will feel it more although in the past I have spent Christmas with Phil including Christmas Day but quite a few times we have not celebrated it on that day apart from having the Christmas meal. We have had the other festivities such a presents etc when he children were available so I often have spent part or all of Christmas Day with my parents.
Dad has been mentioning though recently he keeps having very strong memories and I am sure it is because as the shops and TV bombard us with Christmas articles it is triggering the fact she died on Christmas Day.
I think that dad will have a difficult Christmas Day I will have to think of something to make is very special and try to lessen the painful memories.
