Rumsfeld stepping down is a calculated move...and may be a smart one

A lot will be made of Rumsfeld stepping down. The Democrats will be the ones to miss him most. After all, it is Donald Rumsfeld the left made the point man for their hatered of all things Bush. He was vilified because he was effective, says the right. And to those of us in the military he was very effective for a lot of things, and yes, made mistakes in others.

But here's the calculation...Bush disarms the left and the Pelosi steamroller by taking the target off the screen. The democrats roll into power without the ability to strut around ranting about a supposed "mandate" and demand Rumsfeld on a platter. Of course they would hope that the process would take 6-8 weeks. THATS....what they wanted.

The next target will be Cheney and Rove. So, we will see what transpires in the coming weeks. But here's the great news. They really think, because of their inability to hide their unbelieveable arrogance, that Bush is the inferior idiot. They will make the mistake again.

Didn't anyone hear him say he had talked to Gates on Sunday and that they were in agreement on the issues? That means that this action was already being planned, and it had nothing to do with the outcome of the election. He said he didn't want to politicize it and so waited, he didn't want to undermine the troops and make it seem to be about an election. And that makes sense.

Bush is a lame duck at this point. There's no way he'll get anything done. Not only will the Dems crucify him, so will the Republicans. Bush will spend the next 2 years in Congressional Court. He'd best do everything he can at this point to help get the party back on its feet for 2008. This means a low profile for himself and putting some Republicans in positions where they can get the visibility needed to shape and rebuild the party.

Rove's job was basically to polish turds.

He did a good job for what he had to work with. :p

Is this the place where someone will say George Bush is the smartest man who ever lived?

No, this is the place where somebody (me, in fact) calls you an idiot.

If Rumsfeld stepping down is a good move, the time to do it was when Bush still had a Republican congress who would approve a suitable replacement.

Think it through a bit. Confirmation hearings for the new Sec Def will be extremely uncomfortable for the Libs, who will have to appear "strong on defense" while at the same time trying to placate their moonbat base. This WILL be interesting!

Probably Rove could move on, but not Cheney, there's no way Cheney would resign, and no way the administration would push a nomination fight for VP when disaster could strike and Pelosi could end up President.

I expect that Rove will also step down. He's probably being courted by some Republican or other who has presidential aspirations. There's really not much left for him to do at the WH.

They will just bash the next guy. He isn't a military veteran, ergo he is a coward according to them.

Its a smart move, but not for this reason. I'm afraid many conservatives (myself included) have done exactly what we've accused liberals of doing over the years: sticking our head in the sand. Things may not be as bad in Iraq as the media portrays, but they aren't going as well as they need to be. I love Rummy, but he's the proverbial football coach who refuses to change from the wing-T formation (exaggeration to illustrate point) and is no longer winning games with it.

The inability to make changes when changes are needed is the first sign of poor leadership, even from good leaders. We need a change in defense and elsewhere. But we also need the White House to realize that they can not let arrogance get the best of them.

Remember: even if the liberals and the media (one in the same) are wrong, and they are always wrong, that doesn't mean we are always right and on the best course of action.

I'm not happy about the election results, but we must get to work and stop thinking everyone will just realize our ideas are better. We have a war here at home we must fight.

What in the hell are we talking about? Cheney, being the V-President was not appointed he was ELECTED by the people and will fulfill the people's mandate. The left is attempting to confuse us, AGAIN and attempting to steal the election of 2004, in 2006.

Ummm. Do you think the Dems won't be calling Citizen Rumsfeld to testify? Of course they will. His resignation just means that he's more likely to shift blame to others since he's no longer working for GWB. Personal loyalty only goes so far when the Dems start turning up the heat.

After listening to Bush's press conference, it is clear that Rumsfeld's resignation is but the start and that Bush intends to give the Democrats a large part of what they want. He will also press for an immigration deal that sells out the Republican base and the country at large. We are in for many unhappy days.

Please forgive me .... but this thread is delusional.

Agreed. There are a lot of people today trying to make excuses for what happened. There are also a lot of people today trying to see silver linings in all this.

Time would be better spend on the beginnings of a conservative agenda on how to get back on track. But, then, it's too early for that. People still need to vent.

I fear we have more bloodletting ahead of us. And I'm not at all sure those in power understand what is needed to be done.
