Tension Between Nifong, Duke Sports Voice (DUKELAX)
ABC11 News Team ^ | November 7, 2006 | Tamara Gibbs

(11/07/06 -- DURHAM) - Politics turned personal today as Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong greeted voters - - some with very strong opinions about the Duke lacrosse rape case.

Eyewitness News cameras were rolling when Nifong tried to shake hands and say hello to Bob Harris, the voice of Duke sports. Harris was in his car as Nifong walked up. "You've got to be nicer than that," Nifong said.

"Get out of here," Harris said. "Don't pull this crap."

"This isn't about Duke," Nifong said. "This isn't about Duke at all."

"No," Harris said. "It's about honesty. You're not honest."

Nifong is running for district attorney against Lewis Cheek, who says he will not run if elected, and Steve Monks, a write-in candidate. Embattled Nifong met with voters heading to the polls in Durham.

"I've had more smiles than scowls, but I've gotten a little bit of both," he said.

No smiles from Tony McCurdy - - for him the election is all about the Duke lacrosse rape case.

"[Nifong] went overboard in prejudging a certain situation, which I feel, with the evidence coming out, is not quite the way it was portrayed at first," McCurdy said.

Velvet voice of Duke play-by-play hits 1K

Luciana Chavez, Staff Writer, N&O, Feb 12, 2006 12:30 AM

Bob Harris says the best place in college basketball is the crow's nest at
Cameron Indoor Stadium. There, above the crowd, the radio voice of the Duke
Blue Devils can call the game without anyone yelling in his ear.

Harris, 63, has a soft spot for the familiar cramped space, accessible only
by a short ladder, where he has described the action at men's basketball
games 15 to 20 times per year since 1976.

* Bob Harris is more well-known in Durham and throughout the
state than a DA could ever hope to be...until eight months ago.

"There was one guy who came by with a lacrosse T-shirt. I didn't talk to him. I might have prejudged him. I'm not sure."

Just repeating history.

Nifong was correct about one thing. It was NOT about Duke. It was and is completely about winning his primary. Nifong would be happy to railroad a black person the next time if that is what it takes to win.

Oh how I wish the last photo had the cop putting Nifong into the back of his car with cuffs on.

Good point you picked up, just like he prejudged those 3 young men from Duke. What a jerk!

Nifong may well win; but in the long run, that may be better for the outcome of the case itself.

Because a defeated Nifong would probably let it hang on until he leaves office in January. Then the new appointee would have to take a few weeks to 'study' the matter. And so on . . .

Perhaps this way a strong Nifong will feel able to drop the matter. Maybe he has planned all along to drop it and has only held on until after the election.

who knows?

But at any rate, neither his defeat nor his election need necessarily be cause for rejoicing or despair.

The essential facts of the prosecution (persecution) have not changed, and do not change until this gets thrown out.

Yeah, I suspect the political and legal pressure on Nifong is the only reason this case was not dropped during the summer. Of course these guys do not just want this case to go away, they want their reputations back. This has required them to let the pressure build up on Nifong.

"Of course these guys do not just want this case to go away, they want their reputations back."

They'll get their reputations back and then some in the civil suits and in the books that will be written about this.

Remember that Alfred Dreyfus was never 'cleared' by the French government; he was only 'pardoned' (for a crime he did not commit).

But history has vindicated him, and nobody today considers him guilty or his conviction valid.

The current judge might let it run April.

It was in their best interest to get rid of Nifong. Now they are going to have to face the consequences of their decision. When he railroads young black males it will be their fault. When the city ends up paying a settlement because of the MILF Man it will be their fault. When they end up paying a settlement because of the Duke case it will be their fault.

And Monks, the republican party needs to get rid of that ahole.
