Word For The Day, Monday, November 6, 2006 - inveterate
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | November 6, 2006 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

inveterate \in-VET-uhr-it\, adjective
1. Firmly established by long persistence; deep-rooted; of long standing.
2. Fixed in habit by long persistence; confirmed; habitual.

Example sentence:
I was an inveterate museum-goer from the age of fourteen, when I'd take the trolley to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts after school and wander the halls of Greek antiquities.
-- Jane Alexander, Command Performance

Etymology:
Inveterate is from the past participle of Latin inveterari, "to grow old, to endure," from in- + vetus, veter-, "old." It is related to veteran, "one who is long experienced in some activity or capacity; an old soldier of long service; one who has served in the armed forces." The noun form is inveteracy or inveterateness.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

No, I'm subbing today. Did I get your hopes up that the week was almost over?

"I always check the news here before the TV."

Yes, but does your kitchen crockery talk to you?

I don't blame him in the least..............I hated mine before they even went on.

And hated them even more when I wound up wearing them for 3 years, even though it was only supposed to be fo 18 months. They were removed 2 weeks after my graduation pictures were taken....I came very close to strangling the orthodontist when he said "Oh you should have told me, we could have taken them off." The SOB knew when my pictures were being taken and had told me to try and change the picture date. bustard.

I'm inclined to think it's neither the coffee nor the cup.

Good thing I don't have any whine glasses.

By the time the elections get here, I'm so danged exhausted from all the TV ads, mailings, phone calls, et cetera. I can't wait until tomorrow is over. We have something akin to 50 propositions. I'm voting "yes" on only three.

What a waste of paper.

Now I know why our inveterate postman takes a couple of weeks off before elections. He's probably gotten a bad back from carry all the "literature" around.

But in AZ, we must show a photo ID. I'm all for that.
