ABC'S 'NIGHTLINE' TOTALLY IGNORES KERRY GAFFE, COVERS BEATLE'S DIVORCE INSTEAD
October 31, 2006 | L.N. Smithee

I was dreary-eyed and slumping in my chair as I saw the news about John Kerry's outrageous statement to graduating students, and how they need to be "smart" or else they would end up "stuck in Iraq." Having heard the audio from the John Ziegler show page on the KFI radio website, I wondered how in the world the Democrat suck-up MSM would spin it to minimize the damage. I couldn't think of anything, but I knew they would.

What I didn't expect is this: one of the most reliably slanted newscasts on television, ABC News' Nightline, didn't take the story on at all. It had been brewing on the web and talk radio 24 hours before, simmering at the White House press briefing and during Rush Limbaugh's show, and came to a boil when Kerry reacted with a flurry of unapologetic indignation and name-calling. It led off each of the big three nightly newscasts. It even was the first thing you saw when accessing the ABCNews.com home page. Still, tonight's Nightline anchor Martin Bashir didn't even allude to the controversy, instead announcing the three topics tackled tonight: Stem cell research as a swing issue in the midterm elections (which, by the way, used the same Rush Limbaugh quote from two weeks ago as if he hadn't clarified his position); The nasty divorce of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills; and the question of whether explicit sex scenes in novels should be held against politician-authors when they run for office.

If Kerry's gaffe is considered on tomorrow night's Nightline, it will have to compete for attention with ABC News' penchant for providing air time to Rosie O'Donnell every time she wants it. Now, she's got some Katrina rescue thing going on.

To me, this says that ABC News political director Mark Halperin -- a "red diaper baby" whose family has longtime ties to Democratic Party higher-ups and George Soros' Open Society Institute -- thinks this issue might have legs, and a week before a close and crucial election, he and others want to cut those legs off right now.

CBS's morning news at 4:30 had it as the #2 story.

Even the obtuse Lefties in the msm must be getting frustrated with having to cover up for Kerry's latest insults of the military...and right before the election that they have tried so valiantly to rig in favor of the Democrat Party. It's not so easy being shills.

I deliberately tuned into Matthews - the Dem shill - to see his spin. What a laugh I had! In the midst of his sputtering and usual incoherence his expression was one of tension and anger that his hero (now that the Jersey Girls are gone) was exposed once again.

He used the old "out of context" line to justify his absurd defence of Kerry. But it was great! Even HE knew that what he was saying was BS and he was clearly angry that he knew he was making a fool of himself trying to defend the indefensible. GREAT ENTERTAINMENT!!

Local rag (Houston Chronicle) had the story on page A10 and what did run was, as one would expect, nothing but a rehash of the Kerry line.

Can ANYONE any longer doubt that the MSM is ENTIRELY biased to the left? Bill O'Reily had a segment on it yesterday referencing a new non partisan study proving their bias and then there is this.

The disdain within the industry for Fox News Channel ought to be enough to prove it, but there are always people like Eric Alterman, the author of What Media Bias? and Steven Rendell, the sub-genius behind FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting) that say omission of details of labyrinthine corporate relationships with the TV networks constitutes a bias toward big business. For example, the way a 60 Minutes expose on the tobacco industry was spiked at the behest of CBS lawyers, considering that the then-chairman of the company also owned tobacco giant Lorillard. That kind of stuff may happen every so often, but more pervasive is on-air staff schtuff like CNN's Suzanne Malveaux saying she "hope[s]" the Kerry story dies tomorrow (that is, today).

It probably will Suzanne as people just like you control what is considered to be "news" at present but you had better enjoy it while it lasts as the end is near for that as well!

The didn't cover Kerry's gaffe but covered the Heather Mills / McCartney divorce?
