eese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have separated after seven years of marriage, PEOPLE has confirmed.

"We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate," a rep for the couple said in a statement released Monday. "They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time." TMZ.com first reported the couple's split.

Witherspoon, 30, and Phillippe, 32, have two children, daughter Ava, 7, and son Deacon, 3.

The couple met when a mutual friend brought Phillippe to Witherspoon's 21st-birthday party. Two years later, after they had costarred in 1999's Cruel Intentions, he proposed. They married in June 1999 and had Ava three months later.

I didn't mind the thread. Gives us a break from Washington.

Reese recently played June Carter in "Walk the Line", I thought she was really good. She was also well known for the lead in the movie "Legally Blonde".

More on Reese

The problem is that you post a story about Reese and then I might post a story about Britney and some other clunkhead will post a story about Paris.

She played June Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash movie Walk The Line.

This is a shame. I think she's a great actress as well as beautiful.

I hate to see one of the few likable celebrities go through this kind of personal heartache - I feel bad for the kids.

She's a terrific actress! I loved that movie "Walk The Line". She was talking on a show about how she didn't know that she would have to sing for the movie when she signed up and she ran off the set when they asked her to sing and called her lawyer. Thank god she decided to do it. Her singing was AWESOME!

I think they should do a remake of "The Last Picture Show" and have Reese play the character of Jacy Farrow.

I think I know what you're getting at, in which case you should probably rent Twilight from 1998, starring Miss Witherspoon as an uninhibited collegian on the run.

Gene Hackman is pretty good in it.

The only real drawback is Sarandon.

When I saw the Last Picture Show, I was amazed how much a really young Cybil Shepherd looked like Reese Witherspoon.

I think they are both from Memphis.

I agree. Reese is prettier.

BTW, I see that Reese is preparing to shoot a brand new anti-American film entitled Rendition.

It will star extra-fancy cowpoke Jake Gyllenhaal as a CIA man who has rendered several terrorism suspects over to the Egyptian security police for interrogation and decides to blow the whistle on torture.

it's directed by a South African who made a movie sympathetic to the original Mahdi Army of 1880s Sudan.
