A lot of White Americans are unsure of all the places our family came from. Unless your family came within the last 100 years or so and with so many marriages across ethnic groups, many of us are a real Heinz 57 mix of various Europeans other ethnicities and we’ve have lost track.
I know I’m half Norwegian because my father was born there but then even he wasn’t sure if there wasn’t some Scotch on his father’s side. I know my mother’s maternal grandparents came from Germany because I have their naturalization papers from the mid-eighteen hundreds. She thought her father’s side came from England but also thought they might have been Welsh – the family name Gibb being more likely Welsh.
My bother’s kids are: Norwegian, German, English and or Welsh, Irish, Dutch, and about 25% Cherokee on their mother’s side - at least that’s what we think.
