College Football - Live Thread - Week EIGHT
Sportsline.com Scoreboard ^ | Thursday, 19th October to Sunday, 22nd October

Posted on 10/19/2006 3:09:52 PM PDT by MikefromOhio

Week Seven brought another major upset in the Big Ten and the SEC. Iowa lost to Indiana; Vanderbilt beat Georgia snapping a 53 game losing streak to ranked teams. While this season has been kind of odd in that here have not been very many major upsets, the past two weeks have provided their fair share. The Auburn – Florida game lived up to the hype and went down to the last minute with Auburn winning the game. It was not without controversy either, which is another long running story this year. This week features two games that should get top billing. Texas travels to face Nebraska while Clemson hosts Georgia Tech in a battle for ACC supremacy.

Saturday, October 21st, 2006 – 7:45 PM on ESPN

at

(12) Clemson (-7.5) at (13) Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech has the best defense in the ACC. They shut down Notre Dame and have been dominant in each of their other games. Clemson has a chance to really take control of the ACC with a win. Clemson will win this game, but it will be closer than a Touchdown.

Clemson 24 – Georgia Tech 20

Saturday, October 21st, 2006 – 12:00 PM on ABC

at

(5) Texas (-4.5) at (17) Nebraska

For Texas, this game is all about maintaining its spot in the Big XII and BCS pecking order. To have any chance at reaching Glendale, they MUST win out. As for Nebraska, they are in a position to take control of the Big XII North. It would be a major upset for Nebraska to win this game, but a good showing here is not out of the question either. This will also be a measuring stick for how good USC might be.

Texas 34 – Nebraska 17

Thursday October 19th, 2006 (ESPN Thursday Night Game)

North Carolina at Virginia (-7)

More or less as a place maker until next week, there’s really no reason to watch this game. Virginia and North Carolina both have struggled this year and expect this game to be a clunker of epic proportions.

Virginia 20 – UNC 7

Friday October 20th, 2006 (ESPN Friday Night Game)

(4) West Virginia (-22.5) at UCONN

I find it kind of hard to believe that WVU won’t win this by 5 or 6 TDs. Maybe the line is like it is so that people will put some money on it. ***Note for all Yahoo League members, this game IS ON THE LIST.

West Virginia 49 – UCONN 17

Saturday October 21st 2006 (in ranking order)
Indiana at (1) Ohio State (-30.5)

Ohio State 42 – Indiana 6

Iowa at (2) Michigan (-12.5)

Michigan 34 – Iowa 17

(3) USC BYE

(6) Louisville (-17) at Syracuse

Louisville 37 – Syracuse 13

Alabama at (7) Tennessee (-11)

Tennessee 31 – Alabama 17

Tulane at (8) Auburn (-31.5)

Auburn 45 – Tulane 10

(9) Florida BYE

UCLA at (10) Notre Dame (-13.5)

ND 43 – UCLA 22

Washington at (11) Cal (-23.5)

Cal 42 – Washington 17

Fresno St. at (14) LSU (-33)

LSU 48 – Fresno St. 10

Mississippi at (17) Arkansas (-21)

Arkansas 41 – Ole Miss 17

(16) Oregon (-3.5) at Washington State

Oregon 33 – Washington St. 28

(18) Boise St. (-21) at Idaho

Boise St. 45 – Idaho 10

(19) Rutgers at Pittsburgh (-6.5)

Pittsburgh 23 – Rutgers 17

Colorado at (20) Oklahoma (-14)

Colorado 18 – Oklahoma 14

(21) Wisconsin (-6.5) at Purdue

Wisconsin 35 – Purdue 20

(22) Boston College at Florida St. (-6)

Boston College 33 – FSU 17

(23) Texas A&M at Oklahoma St. (-3.5)

Texas A&M 32 – Oklahoma St. 25

Kansas St. at (24) Missouri (-15)

Missouri 34 – K State 10

(25) Wake Forest BYE

BY REQUEST

Utah (-6) at New Mexico – Thursday, 19th of October (Mountain West Conference)

Utah should win this game and get closer to being bowl eligible. New Mexico can pull the upset, but I don’t see it.

Utah 32 – New Mexico 17

(23) Texas A&M at Oklahoma St. (-3.5)

Texas A&M comes in after a big win for them against Missouri. The line indicates that people aren’t buying it quite yet. I’m a believer.

Texas A&M 32 – Oklahoma St. 25

Sunday October 22nd, 2006 (ESPN Sunday Night Game)

South Florida (-2) at Cincinnati

Cincy is a better team that their record indicates. South Florida can win this game, but I think the home field advantage will help Cincy here.

Cincy 24 – South Florida 21

Record for the year
I'll skip the sob story and just say that if I pick a game one way, you have a better than even chance of being right if you pick it the other way.

117-28 Straight UP
77-64-4 Against the Spread

And Akron beat NC State in Raleigh-Durham. The MAC has some excellent teams. If you're not really paying attention, it's easy to think the MAC is full of patsies, but that hasn't been the case for some time now.

"And just who is it you root for that has this ultima uber strong schedule?"

I root for the school I graduated from, USC. You remember them from a couple years ago, when you brought your "number 4 team in the country" out here to get their hat handed to them in the Rose Bowl? I also root for the Pac-10 teams, who are not afraid to schedule top teams and will play them on the road.

Heh. USC. Tough schedule............

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

You guys have played one decent team so far, get ranked #2 (and how did that happen with your schedule so far?)and you're complaining about Michigan and Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten?

Bwahahahahahahahahaha.

Now, you guys may be good this year, but you've almost been beat three times by inferior teams, unranked teams. Your only good games are to come, so this year, so far, you're untested.

Deal with it.

That USC team was good, ranked #3, and I thought clearly should have been #1.

Take one freak play away in that game, and it's close btw. No one else played them that well for two more years until....remember.....

Texas beat you.

*Crying towel*

You know that #2 team Texas, that Ohio State of the weak schedule waxed.........

Wow, where do we start?

"Take one freak play away in that game, and it's close btw."

Take away Leinart fumbling a 4th quarter snap on the Michigan 3 yardline and USC goes up 35-7 with 8 minutes to go. That game was a rout, but the point is, all the 'experts' were talking about how Michigan was too strong, too fast, too tough for USC.

"Texas beat you."

Yeah, they did and they did a helluva a job in doing so. Please understand, however, that the Texas team that beat USC was last year's team. Ohio State didn't beat them either, in Columbus, if you remember. For someone who speaks so aggressively about 'facts', you sure don't pay very close attention to their inclusion in your posts.

He's a Pac 10 guy. But let's take a look at how the two conferences would fare if they played each other. Since the BCS only ranks the Top 25, let's use Jeff Sagarin's rankings (in parentheses):

Ohio State (1) v. Cal (2)
Michigan (3) v. USC (4)
Wisconsin (15) v. Oregon (17)
Penn State (23) v. Washington State (18)
Iowa (26) v. Oregon State (30)
Michigan State (43) v. Arizona State (32)
Minnesota (44) v. Washington (35)
Purdue (59) v. UCLA (38)
Indiana (74) v. Arizona (64)
Illinois (94) v. Stanford (129)

In other words, it's an even split. While some would like you to believe that the Big Ten is weak, from top to bottom they match up well with any other conference out there. That's not to take away from the Pac 10, but rather to disprove the mistaken notion that they're somehow a dominant conference.

This started with you saying Ohio State and Michgan had soft schedules, and that WVA and Louisville were getting a short shrift

Clearly you're wrong on both counts, yes? Just admit it, you sound silly.

Now you have shifted to a game several years ago. I never remember any experts, absolutely not one who said that Michigan would win. Where do you get this stuff? Michigan was a clear underdog in that game, and was an inferior team to USC that year. USC should have been in the BCS final that year, and would have clocked anyone.......and did.

That being said, since you have to shift to make your point (whatever that is). Who has USC played that's good this year?

I'll answer if you won't........

How does Jeff rank the 4 conferences....SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac 10?

Just curious.

I personally rank them in the order I just posted, with SEC being the toughest of the four top to bottom, Pac 10 being weakest top to bottom.

BTW, that doesn't mean that individual teams of each of those conferences can't be the best btw......

"How does Jeff rank the 4 conferences......"

Uh, I think you just stepped in it!!

Look, I don't want to argue with you guys forever about this stuff. I was just raising the issue about Ohio State and Michigan primarily as an after-the-fact response to the ridiculous 'schedule' criticism USC took on this very board during their recent three-year run. Just returning the favor, generally, not specifically to you.

Good luck to you guys the rest of the way. And unlike many others on this board, a win against Notre Dame gets commendation from me, and Michigan had a dominant game against those guys earlier this year.

I don't know - I can't find that info anywhere. Personally, I think it's too close to call between the SEC, Big Ten and PAC 10, and the Big 12 is fourth but getting closer as the season wears on.

Does he rank Cal at number 2 right now?

Didn't they get beat pretty bad by the orange convicts of Tennessee?

College football is a lot of fun, and takes a lot of.....*ahem*.....discussion to make our teams good.

:-)

Good luck to you as well.

And have fun, this is a great American tradition.

They are being purposefully vague about it, but maybe this week or the week after from what I read.

Amazing.

Even if Cal beats USC, I doubt they'd get to the BCS final with the polls as they are.

What's going to be interesting is if neither loses prior to their game, Cal could very likely be favored in that game, even with USC being rated higher and even with the game at USC.

True. Maybe we'll see two Big Ten v. Pac 10 matchups in BCS bowls this year...

I'd go something like this:

SEC
Big Ten
Pac 10
Big East
Big XII
ACC
