The outcome of next month's general election could really change the make-up of Congress.
If the Democrats snatch seats from the Republicans, it could mean a serious shift in who controls the House and the Senate.
Senate candidates Jim Pederson and Jon Kyl are right in the middle of this tug-of-war for political power.
Tucson Today Anchor Dara Demi explains which party... they think... would provide the best leadership for America.
Ever since President Bush was sworn into office... the Republicans have been the party of political power... dominating both the House and the Senate.
But, news of congressman Mark Foley's page scandal.. combined with growing discontent over the war in Iraq... could help swing votes in the Democrats' favor this November.
And, that's exactly what senate candidate Jim Pederson hopes will happen.
Jim Pederson - "I think it's critically important. I think our party has to control at least one house of congress to serve as a counter-balance to this administration."
The Democrat says right now, America is losing on several fronts... including immigration, health care, and education.
He wants to turn that around... by putting the skills he honed in Arizona's business sector... to use in Washington's political arena.
Jim Pederson - "I think I can go back there and take a pragmatic, realistic practical approach to solving the problems that we face."
But, problem solving is what incumbent Jon Kyl insists... he and his fellow Republicans are already doing.
Sen. Jon Kyl - "The most serious challenge of our time are these terrorists who will do us evil. And, I've had a big part to play in writing the legislation that gives us the tools to fight the terrorists through our intelligence."
Kyl also credits the GOP with adding to the integrity of the U.S. Supreme court... by confirming Chief Justice John Roberts... and Justice Samuel Alito.
Jon Kyl - "We would not be able to confirm those kind of judicial nominees, if the Democrats were to take control of the Senate and not be cooperative with President Bush."
And, Kyl points out... tax cuts... put in place by Republicans... are boosting the country's bottom line.
Sen. Jon Kyl - "The country is doing phenomenally well economically and that's another reason why Republican control of the Senate is important."
You can help decide which party... should win this political power play... when you cast your ballot on November 7th.
