The resort town of Mount Crested Butte is giving away free pepper spray after several women reported being assaulted.
Police spokeswoman Julia Shirk said 200 spray key chains were ordered and about 30 women have come by to pick one up.
Shirk said that even though it is a small town, people feel safer carrying the pepper spray, especially with the ski season approaching and thousand of out-of-towners will be visiting.
Blaming the tourists who may arrive in the future is nuts.
IMHO
"Shirk said that even though it is a small town, people feel safer carrying the pepper spray, especially with the ski season approaching and thousand of out-of-towners will be visiting."
Ah, I missed that LONG sentence.
All through college I had a big pepper spray thing on my key chain. I had night classes and damn right I felt a little safer having my finger on that to protect myself at 9:00 at night!
Crested Butte IS a really small town, surprised this is happening.
Some self defence is a good thing.
I wonder what is going on ?
Drugs, immigrants, copy cats...?
Yes, it is. The Lovely Wife has been studying Okinawan karate (the Okinawans later taught karate to the Japanese.......but ONLY what they taught their own kids so they wouldn't hurt each other because they mistrusted the Japanese....true story) for about three years now. It isn't flashy, no high kicks, damned efficient, damned deadly. I pity the poor bastard who'd assault that 6' former farm girl (and also my weight lifting partner). I truly do.

Who knows?? Article is kinda sparse about how long the attacks have been going on. I agree w/you that it seems silly to be already blaming the tourists.
If CB has a problem, they should ask for outside help from CBI or FBI.
The article is sparce; maybe more will leak out soon ?
Catching the perps should be a priority before... rather than after more attacks.
Several assaults on women in Crested Butte this summer have alarmed some people, so the ski town of Mount Crested Butte is giving away free pepper spray.
One suspect in the attacks was caught through DNA testing and is now in jail awaiting trial...
