BEIJING (AFP) - A company in south China has developed the nation's first cooking robot, equipping it with the skills to cook thousands of traditional dishes, state media said.

The robot, developed by Fanxing Science and Technology Co. in the city of Shenzhen, knows how to "fry, bake, boil and steam, and can perform other special Chinese cooking actions," Xinhua news agency reported.

At a recent show arranged by the company, the robot cooked a dish of "beautifully-flavored, attractive-looking" shrimp in five minutes, according to Xinhua.

The robot will hit the market in 2007, targeting mainly fast-food restaurants, while a family-friendly version for the general public will go on sale later.

Hong Kong gets robot waiter (can't cook the food merely take orders)

http://www.ndtv.com/morenews/showmorestory.asp?slug=Hong+Kong+gets+robot+waiter&id=94504

NDTV Correspondent

Monday, October 9, 2006 (Hong Kong):

It's not the food that's attracting people to one of Hong Kong's many restaurants, but a new waiter.

He's brightly coloured has flashing lights for eyes, and is Hong Kong's first robotic waiter.

The robot greets customers and takes their orders. The customer says the name of the dish they would like served into the robot's screen and the order is completed.

Right now, Robo Waiter 1, as it's known, can't cook the food merely take orders.

Restaurant owners say they have plans to add a robo-chef to the staff in the near future.

Director of Cyber Robotics Technology, which owns the robot, Peter Chow, says it provides service with a difference.

It will only work at fast food.

Never work for fine dining unless technology advances alot.

Your ingredients change from batch to batch. Are these tomatoes overly sweet or bitter. Is this garlic mild or pungent. That is what you pay for in a fine dining restaurant among other things is a palatte. How much salt, acid, sweetener do you add to get a good flavor balance with the ingredients you have in.

In the future, I could see a robot being programmed to "taste" something for balance, but that is so off in the future it isn't funny.

McDonalds on the other hand already has robotic drink machines, and alot more can be done to eliminate humans. A robot with a temperature probe would actually be safer than humans cooking meat. More easy to sterilize.
