According to NY Daily News and ESPN.
Under .500 managers deserve to get fired.
I'm kind of glad that the Yankees blew it this time; I am tired of seeing Torre cry whenever they win.
I'm more of a football fan than a baseball fan, but game 5 of the '95 ALDS between the Damn Yankees and Mariners is one of the most amazing games I've ever seen in any sport. Seattle refused to lose.
For this list, they had to meet three criteria. It had to be an upset of some significance, and the underdog had to win a close well-played game by both teams. All but maybe #3 qualifies, and that's arguable in that Boston was going up against the Big Red Machine of the 70's. Anyway, the best games ever, IMO:
10. 1980 Winter Olympics, USA vs. USSR in hockey. Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!
9. 2004, Game 6, ALCS, Red Sox vs. Damned Yankees. Schilling's bleeding all over the place but still breaks the Yankees backs. Game 7 was an afterthought.
8. 1998, Super Bowl XXXII, Green Bay vs. Denver. John Elway finally wins the Big One.
7. 1985 NCAA Men's Finals, Georgetown vs. Villanova. One of the biggest upsets of alltime as 'Nova knocks off the Hoyas.
6. Boston College at Miami, 1984. Flutie's Hail Mary.
5. NC State-Houston, NCAA men's basketball final in 1982. The late Jim Valvano running around the court looking for somebody to hug
4. Game 5, 1995 ALCS, Damned Yankees at Seattle
3. Game 6, 1975 World Series, Reds at Red Sox. Carlton Fisk's Body Language Homer.
2. 2006 Rose Bowl, Texas vs. USC. The greatest individual performance I've ever seen in a football game courtesy of Vince Young.
1. 1984 Orange Bowl, Miami vs. Nebraska. Before they were Thug U., Miami was a 17 pt. dog against an 'invincible' Huskers team. I cleaned up on bets in that one. But Tom Osborne had a pair of brass ones between his legs by going for two when a PAT would have resulted in a tie, but won the National Championship...
The only thing that upsets me about this is I wanted the Indians to get Pinella. I love his fiery demeanor and passion for the game. Looouuuu can kick a few butts that need kicking.
I gotta remember that one...
Good catcher in his day though.
I would go with Steinbrenner (banned for life?) as the most overrated psychotic in the game though.
I stopped following baseball years ago once REAL sportsmen died out. These guys are not sportsmen , they are movie star type junkies who charge the parents of little kids $50 to sign an autograph. Could care less if the cancelled all baseball tomorrow. Are there any Americans on baseball teams anymore by the way ?

My sentiments exactly. Professional baseball sucks. It's a kids' game, that's why, in my estimation, Little League games are much more fun to watch.
Uhhh... he played right field.
Sad, Joe is a class act, and a Republican to boot.
No Cashman is not married to George's daughter. Steve Swindal is married to George's daughter.
This is a bullsh*t story. The Daily News "sources" are the drunks at the bar that their British tabloid editors frequent.
Torre could well be gone, but I can guarantee you no official Yankee sources were breathlessly running to the Daily News minutes after the game to announce that Torre will be fired. It's complete bullsh*t.
Agreed.
Although, as you say, it may well come to pass.
Hey, John Sterling, father of the second worst routine in sports broadcasting (Chris Berman's stupid, juvenile nickname making is the worst imho) - this is for you.
THHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHEEE YANKEES LOSE!
THHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHEEE YANKEES LOSE!
There, now I feel better.
Why was this posted? There was no such announcement. IT was purely speculation by an ESPN columnist. Torre has NOT been fired (yet). He will be, of course. A-Rod is a bigger problem for the Yankees. He has a no-trade clause for 2 more years. They cannot get rid of him, and he wants to stay to overcome his failures this year, he says. What I don't get is why the Yanks ever hired Randy Johnson in the first place, who has been dreadful for 3 years. And Jared Wright? I think Brian Cashman should go as well.
Wow! Losing my mind ping! Who caught during his playing days for the Yankees?
Thurman Munson (until he crashed his jet)..
Well, I just heard Daily News beat writer Bill Madden on WFAN with Mike Francesa, and it's his scoop. He's covered the Yankees for a long, long time and he's a reputable source.
It seems he heard it directly from Steinbrenner -- who was ranting and raving last night like never before, Madden said. So it sounds like George blowing a gasket and shouting out blunt things in his rage to anyone within his hearing range.
When things settle down, Steinbrenner will be reminded that Torre's still owed $7 million for next year and there's lots of honor and dignity issues to deal with here.
So the scoop's legit, I think, but with a big asterisk. Torre's almost certainly gone, but there's sure to be backtracking and denials today, and nothing will happen for a while.
Ain't that the truth. LOL!
According to Chicago radio Joe Girardi has put off a meeting with the Cubs to go talk to the Yankees.
That's who the Yankees should hire. Not some washed up old guy.
But it's the same media in Chicago who missed a known fact among Cubs circles that Andy MacPhail was stepping down as team president.
Don't want to lose Joe to the Yankees. But that's our real competition for him. Not the Nats, Rangers or Giants (where Bob Brenley will end up)
What did Girardi ever do to you?
Heard a rumor he was gay and he turned you down when you made advances?
Everyone with any knowledge of the game thinks the Yankees should hire him.
