That's absolutely true. There's a couple of great Polish comedies by Stanislaw Bareja (Mis, Alternatywy 4, Zmiennicy)exposing the absurdity of living under the commie rule. He couldn't criticize the system directly but did it by ridiculing the every-day reality: absurd regulations, poor work ethos, lines and empty shops etc. I really don't know whether this kind of humour would be comprehensible for a foreigner who didn't experience this on his own. We were laughing at it and actually this was like laughing through our tears. Because the world outside was turned upside down.
